Introduction

Half-Life: MMod is a fan-made modification for the original Half-Life. Much like the "MMod" modification for Half-Life 2, HL1: MMod aims to enhance the game's visual presenation, update the gameplay and gunplay systems, and add some much-needed quality-of-life improvements. And as of a recent game update in March 2023, HL1: MMod features basic support for creating MMod-compatible versions of custom campaigns and community-made mappacks/mods.

The following guide details several campaigns that are compatible with Half-Life: MMod. I aim to update the guide on a semi-frequent basis as I continue to test various mods for compatibility with MMod.
Half-Life: Uplink

Half-Life: Uplink, released on February 12, 1999, is Valve's official demo for the original Half-Life. Uplink features a standalone story and levels that were not featured in the base game. For more details on Uplink, be sure to visit the fan-run Half-Life: Uplink website.[www.halflifeuplink.com]

- HOW TO PLAY WITH MMOD -

Uplink is included with the base installation of Half-Life: MMod. To play Uplink, simply launch MMod through Steam and select the "Play Half-Life 1: MMod - Uplink" launch option.

USS Darkstar

USS Darkstar, released in August 1999, is a fan-made campaign created by Neil Manke. Set in 2066, the mod explores a compromised zoological research expedition aboard the USS Darkstar that had the goal of seeking out, collecting, and investigating new alien life-forms in unexplored sectors of the universe.

Someplace Else

Pay attention - things are more complex than they might first appear. Intrigue, subterfuge, and mystery predominate. An ancient machine tainted with human technology, guarded by a vicious pack of Nihilanthi aliens. There are few answers, but many questions. Will they ever be resolved?

With a plot which links in to MINERVA for Half-Life 2, Someplace Else is possibly one of the stranger single-player Half-Life maps around. You'll never look at Xen in quite the same way again...

The Xeno Project I & II

The terraformation of Xen known as "The Xeno Project" has begun. Noticeable changes to the planet thus far include regular gravity and a breathable atmosphere. After agreeing to work for the Gman, you are teleported onto a train, inbound to the Xeno Project control complex.

Your mission is to report to an underground test lab which has been set up for further experiments into portal technology. Everything seems to be going smoothly until the military decides to completely take over the operation. Once this happens, your goal will be to get the hell off the planet and escape back to earth.....good luck....you'll need it.

ETC

Originally, ETC stood for Earthquake Test Centre, but now that’s been forgotten. All that matters is that you find yourself in a BM-style base with aliens and army trying to kill you. It’s clear that you need to find a way out. In fact, there’s a working portal, if only you could reach it!

Fate Reversal

What if Freeman weren't held in stasis during the portal storm that ravaged the Earth and caught the attention of the Combine? What if Freeman had a chance to prevent the Combine invasion from ever materializing?

What if Freeman could reverse mankind's fate?

Fate Reversal is a 10-map single-player mod for Half-Life. In the mod you come across a variety of locations (including cities and space stations) instead of spending the entire duration in the confines of the Black Mesa Research Facility.

Life's End

Life's End, released in 2005, is a fan-made campaign created by "KingDaniel". In Life’s End, you play as Luther Johnson, late to work on what will be the worst day of his life - because Luther works at Black Mesa. And it’s the day Gordon Freeman’s experiment goes wrong. You’ll visit new and familiar areas of Black Mesa, and go far beyond.

In this mod, the G-Man has tasked Dr. Freeman with shutting down one of the central reactors within Black Mesa's Lambda Complex, as it appears that the Xen creatures have been not only able to use the reactor to open a new rift between Black Mesa and Xen, but are also able to use the reactor's nuclear energy to widen the rift more and more.

Closing Remarks + FAQ

As previously noted, this guide is a work-in-progress - while the current list of compatible mods is rather low, I hope to expand it over time as I continue to test various mods for compatibility with MMod.

In the meantime, if there is a specific mod/mappack that you want me to test for MMod compatibility, be sure to let me know about it in the comments.

Thank you for reading, and have a very safe and productive day.

- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS -

Q: Are the official expansion packs (Blue Shift and Opposing Force) compatible with MMod?
A: At this time, no, they are not compatible, as both BS and OP4 feature new code and content that needs to be ported over to MMod's codebase. Gunship Mark II, the creator of MMod, has stated that support for Blue Shift may be possbile, but has said that he might look into it at a "much later date".

Q: What types of mods are compatible with MMod?
A: Generally speaking, custom mappacks and campaigns that do not modify Half-Life's code are the most likely to be compatible. Unfortunately, this limitation means that a lot of popular Half-Life mods, such as They Hunger, Residual Life, Echoes and Field Intensity, are going to be incompatible with MMod.

In addition, some mappacks that do not feature custom code (such as Edge of Darkness) tend to crash on certain maps due to entity limits. I have heard from some people that running MMod and mods with entity errors like EoD via the Xash3D source port does fix the entity problems, but this is something that I'm not going to be looking into personally, as my primary goal when making MMod-compatible versions of mods is to ensure compatibility with the official Steam version of HL1: MMod.

please port afraid of monsters

no because those games have custom code for the game. only level mods work without having to make a specific recompiled version for each one. how to go about this without the access to op4, bs and decay's code would be to recreate those games code for all enemies, weapon, and entities. as for MP i am unsure and that is a question better asked to the mod dev proper of mmod.

These are fantastic, thank you for putting time into this. Question, is it possible to launch one of these custom maps by adding the "-game GAMENAME" command line in Steam's own Launch Options? I've tried and it only seems to work if I make a separate dedicated shortcut.
