How to verify integrity of game files to potentially fix clientside lua errors, missing textures, crashes, etc. If this doesn't fix your issue, your client is either seriously scuffed or you downloaded some cracked version which doesn't contain all of the files you need.

Reasons why you might need to verify your game files
  • Clientside lua errors
  • Missing default materials or entities
  • Crashing when starting Garry's Mod or failing to load
  • Corrupt workshop addons

Does your game look like this?

Verify integrity of game files
Verifying game files is a necessary step that verifies that none of the base Garry's Mod files have been modified or corrupted.

  • Open your Steam Library
  • Find and right-click on "Garry's Mod"
  • Click "Properties"
  • Click "Local Files"
  • Click "Verify integrity of game files"

This will download the Garry's Mod files and remove any modifications to these files which could cause issues.
Removing cached files
  • Shut down Garry's Mod completely
  • Open the Garry's Mod cache folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\cache

Or via Steam library: Right-click Garry's Mod > Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files, then open the garrysmod folder and find cache.

  • Delete all contents inside the cache folder.
  • Clear the download folder as well if issues persist: garrysmod\download
  • Deleting these files force fresh downloads of workshop content.
  • Restart Steam and launch Garry's Mod.
Workshop content
Rule out any bad Workshop addons as the reason for your issue. This is not required but highly recommended.

Un-subscribe from unnecessary or unused addons
  • Open the Steam client.

  • In the main menu hover over Community and click "Workshop" or go to https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/workshop/

  • Scroll down to where you see your Steam Avatar on the right and click "Your Workshop Files"

  • In the menu on the right side of the page under items and Favorited, click "Subscribed Items"

  • Click "Unsubscribe from all" OR click the ✓Subscribed button for each addon that you think may be causing issues. If your game is completely scuffed it's recommended that you make a visual backup of all your critical addons and then Unsubscribe from all.

  • You could also sort your addons by "Date Subscribed". If you think you know about the time your issues started. You can unsubscribe from everything after that point.

Also locally clearing you addon cache (Workshop and locally downloaded ones from servers) Then reinstalling does wonders as well!
