If you're using a controller then instead of S you would move the Left Stick DOWN and press A button to jump backwards.

Exactly my problem too. Sorry, I'm not a keyboard player, I'm a weird game pad user. How does it all work with a game pad? (Of course I also tried it with the keyboard, the keys work as described, but then I can't get myself to hang up again)

You have to hold S and then start holding space and be ready to hook your climbing axes into the wall behind you.

have no issue with A/D which is already used at this stage btw
but s... to jump backward, sorry - it doesn't work :'(
