Weapon Usage Guide
由 Kastrand 制作
My thoughts on Dead Space Remake's weapons, including best case uses for each individual weapon. This is NOT a location guide. All opinions come from playing on Impossible Difficulty.

Intro
Unlike Dead Space: Classic, Every Gun Has A Purpose!

If you liked this guide or found it in any way helpful, please favorite it and rate it <3

This guide was originally going to be an effort post in an attempt to diversify the Steam Forums a little bit. However, I realized it would be hardly seen there. So, posting it as a guide. These are my thoughts on each weapon and how to use them effectively.

I have another guide talking about what I consider to be the 4 main "classes" of weapons, which you can find here. Give it a look, rate, favorite, whatever you'd like lol.
Plasma Cutter - Bread and Butter

The Plasma Cutter is every engineers go-to tool for dismemberment. Even when it is not upgraded, it is a potent and accurate cutting tool that can easily dispatch multiple Slashers with ease. Once upgraded, it becomes a beast. There is a reason the Cutter is an iconic weapon.

Best Usage

It's main downside is taking multiple shots to peel an enemy. Best practice is to pair this with either a Force Gun or Flamethrower. Initiate with a blast from the Force Gun or a spray from the Flamethrower to easily peel back multiple layers and expose bone. At that point, depending on upgrades, your Cutter should take one or two shots to finish off whatever poor necro pissed you off that day.
Pulse Rifle - Boss Killer

The Pulse Rifle is a contentious choice. Lots of players argue that it is the worst weapon in the game and generally awful, and many more miss the Sprinkler of Death (also known as the ♥♥♥♥ Everything Around Me Button), but rest assured, its alternate fire in the Remake is just as fun to use. With high DPS (once upgraded) and high accuracy, the Pulse Rifle is a very good choice for the discerning engineer who needs a reliable option for ranged encounters, and laughs at the phrase "ammo efficiency." While each individual shot has low damage, an accurate engineer will land consistent limb shots, leading to easy dismemberment at considerable range.

Best Usage

Honestly, the Pulse Rifle isn't as terrible as one may think if used in the right circumstances. Its relatively cheap ammo cost per round and large ammo stacks make it good for those times when you just gotta fire down a hallway Aliens style. However, it's alternate fire gives you a valid reason to choose it. With a high explosive proximity mine, you can blow up and kill most common enemies you encounter. Additionally, it is EXCEPTIONALLY good at dealing with both Exploders and bosses that have Puss Sacs. If you KNOW a boss fight is about to come up. Take this gun and all the ammo you have. It is extremely worth it. The Pulse Rifle pairs well with all weapons as an additional option for longer range encounters.
Flamethrower - Damage Over Time

The Flamethrower is another one of those weapons that gets a bad name from the original. Rest assured, fiery death and destruction never felt so good. With a decently ranged primary spray, a secondary crowd control option via the Firewall, and decent stumble chance combined with a reliable damage over time, the Flamethrower is multiple cuts above the original.

Editor's Note: This may need additional confirmation, but I have noticed that both peeled legs or being affected by burn MAY make a necromorph move slower. I'm currently on my One Gun run so I can't test out the Flamethrower. If anybody can confirm or deny this (whether it's a mechanic or an upgrade or I'm just crazy/wrong), I would really appreciate it.

Best Usage

The Flamethrowers alt-fire, the Firewall, causes necromorphs to stop in their tracks on contact, triggering them to scream into the sky and stand in place for a considerable amount of time. Combined with its primary spray, you can do considerable damage with just this weapon alone. The Flamethrower is best paired with the Force Gun (due to its alt-fire) and both cutting tools (Plasma Cutter and Line Gun) for providing an ample amount of peel. Also best used on both Swarmers, Lurkers, and Dividers once they... well... divide. Works equally well on Guardians with all tentacles exposed; the Flamethrower will stun the Guardian and keep it from retracting OR spitting out pods, resulting in an easy kill.
Ripper - Surgical Crowd Control

The Ripper is the third and final weapon from DSC that never really found a place in my weapon wheel, but no longer! What the Ripper lacks in damage, it makes up for in effective and reliable crowd contol and high single target efficiency. I will however, recommend against using its alt-fire until fully upgraded.

Best Usage

When wandering the ship in-between missions and exploring previously visited areas, this is the tool I have out and at the ready by default. The Ripper has the single highest ammo efficiency in the entire game, easily and reliably taking only one saw blade to kill an individual Slasher, Lurker, Leaper, or Spitter, sometimes two when upgraded. Furthermore, the Ripper has the uncanny ability of stunning enemies frequently, so it even has use in horde attacks. Unlike the rest of the weapon roster, this tool has no best pairing when it comes to weapons. However, the Ripper is best used in tight hallways with only one direction of attack, or single enemies that are away from the rest of the crowd of necros. It's stagger potential is heavily reduced against Super variants, so it is best to peel first with the Flamethrower or Force Gun before engaging with the Ripper.
Contact Beam - Obliterator

Do I really need to say much here? It's the Contact Beam. Point at something and blast it away. Keep in mind, its primary fire is now a beam of energy, and its alt-fire is what its primary fire used to be in DSC.

Best Usage

It kills everything. This is your panic weapon when something needs to die fast. The definitive Brute Killer.
Line Gun - Cutter's Big Brother

The Line Gun. Big. Loud. Incredibly Destructive. Take the Line Gun if you get tired of the Plasma Cutter and want something with a little more heft. It can one tap Slashers (sometimes) if you hit the legs, and its alt-fire projects a beam that cuts anything that passes through it.

Best Usage

The Line Gun is another one of those power weapons, like the Contact Beam. High ammo cost, low ammo count, but whatever you're shooting with it will die very quickly. Best paired with the Flamethrower. Make use of both alt-fires to make an impenetrable wall of damage.

Editor's Note: When paired with a physics object you can interact with using kinesis, the laser trap turns the Line Gun into the S.A.B., The Sweeping Annihilation Beams, as seen here.
Force Gun - Hard Crowd Control

The Force Gun is a gravity shotgun. It is straightforward, reliable, and effective. One blast can peel most of the skin and muscle off of a standard necromorph. Upgraded, it might be the most powerful weapon available. It has one downside though; low ammo efficiency. Not much else to say here. Has a new alt-fire this time around. It creates a gravity well!

Comment from HeadHunter996: It should also be noted that the force gun alt fire has upgrades that add DoT and the primary fire is truly terrifying compared to DSC, 2, and 3 combined. If your asking "how much more powerful?", CONTACT BEAM ammo drops more frequently than Force Gun rounds! A friend of mine ran both weapons and the plasma cutter on his first run, and had on average, 6-7 Plasma Cutter mags, 3-4 Contact Beam mags, and 2 mags AT MOST for the Force Gun spare before he buys ammo from the shop for ANY of the weapons listed.

BE AWARE THAT THE DOT WILL AFFECT YOU AS WELL. KEEP THIS IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND WHEN CONSIDERING UPGRADES

Best Usage

The Force Gun's new alt-fire is what makes it truly shine. Swarmed? Shoot it at your feet and run away. Once you catch a bunch of necros in the well, follow up with the Flamethrower and set all your targets alight.
Combat Quirks
Just a list of little things I've noticed, made into a small list:
  • Enemies with peeled legs will move slower
  • The Flamethrower may stun enemies with prolonged fire, but additionally *might* slow an enemy as well. Additionally, it stuns Guardian tentacles and if you catch them with all of their tentacles out, you can kill them quickly and easily
  • You are not affected by the pull of a Gravity Well, but you are affected by the DoT if you get caught in it

Pulse rifle primary is bugged. Most enemies have invulnerability for 0.2 seconds after being shot so most of your shots are wasted and do no damage. This leads to awful ammo efficiency and dps. You can fire it semi-auto but you are just left with a really bad version of the plasma cutter. The only reason to bring it is the secondary grenade launcher. RIP to the full auto in this game.

For what I mean by Combo Slide for below, I mean just another part to this thread.

I would like to suggest a "Combo" slide for weapons, and based off of comments below of what people have found to be effective.
For instance I've found that using the Force Gun Alt-Fire, and Pulse Rifle Alt-Fire is extremely effective for wiping out a crowd of Necro's.
Shoot the Force Gun Alt first, wait till the Necro's get grouped up, then Fire your Pulse Rifle Alt into the center.

For those who haven't tested already, landing the flamethrower alt cartridge into the guardian is an instant kill.

When it comes down to the same or less ammo I will always take the easiest option with the fastest time to kill.
Kastrand  [作者] 2023 年 2 月 10 日 上午 3:08
@thorin.hannahs you should. its really good! i never used the alt on the guardians, but id imagine it would take about the same to less ammo.
thorin.hannahs 2023 年 2 月 10 日 上午 3:06
I heard the alt fire of the flamethrower kills guardians out right. I can't confirm as I don't use the flamethrower.
Kastrand  [作者] 2023 年 2 月 10 日 上午 1:47
@thorin.hannahs ive also noticed that the flamethrower can stunlock a guardian that has its tentacles out and kill it very easily, i should put that in the guide. dont know why i didnt sooner

Pulse Rifle is an anything killer. Use it's alt-fire and you either completely strip the flesh of slashers and leapers or out right kill them. Guardians and Lurkers if you wait for the tentacles to expose a Lurker is one grenade and a Guardian is two. For Brutes 2 to 4 grenades to their backs will kill them depending on if they are normal, super or phantom. A grenade to a Twitcher will pop their stasis module. You can use the primary or secondary fire on bosses but I don't know which is more effective. It is great for when you know you are going to be in an arena, just trap the vent areas and pick up any traps that didn't go off when you are done. Of course the weapon combos well with a lot of weapons. Grenade+Plasma Cutter to Two tap anything that didn't die out right. Gravity Well +Grenade to strip flesh of a group then Plasma Cutter as a finisher. Flamethrower+Pulse Rifle to strip flesh then snap limbs with a burst from the Pulse Rifle. This weapon is just too versatile now.
