Very helpful indeed, though in the end I used a waterfall to make it work I now have a well guarded well! Think I need some extra traps as some trogs have crawled up it I think! and added fortifications to the waterfall itself as an elephant somehow climbed in!

I dont know why but my well room is overflowing from the tile where the waterfall is supposed to be... any ideas?

iq.gobo interesting notion about using the underground river. I may try that as a simpler well for my small fort to start with!

No, iq.gobo. you only draw water from the top most layer. If the water is at least two layers deep, you will not get muddy water as long as you're not scraping the bottom. Think of it as the contamination settles.

Additionally, you can smooth the bottom of the well, which prevents mud.
