Preface

The purpose of this guide is to explain the finer details of the mod WX78's System Overhaul that couldn't be included in the workshop description. It covers WX78's various systems and upgrades in detail and also goes over how to use the new system display menu, among other details. Tips are also included at points to assist those who may want some extra insight on how to play the character effectively.

The difficulty of the mod can be configured in the in-game mod settings menu, but this guide was written for "challenging" difficulty, which is the default.
Energy
Energy is WX78's one and only stat, replacing health, sanity, and hunger. It can generally be viewed as a combination of health and hunger, with sanity being irrelevant. It functions according to the following guidelines:
  • Energy drains over time like hunger at a rate that varies depending on how many systems are enabled and how many upgrades are installed.
  • If health would normally be damaged, energy is lost by the same amount (e.g. from being attacked).
  • Energy can only be restored by effects that would restore hunger, typically eating. Items that restore health like spider glands and healing salves cannot be used.
  • Reaching 0 energy will result in a metldown (a special death unique to WX78, further details in the "Meltdowns" section of this guide).
Sanity and lunacy do not exist for WX78. In terms of gameplay, it is always as if WX78 is at full sanity or zero lunacy. While this means that wormholes can be used for free and monster auras/darkness have no effect, WX78 cannot use magic items that would normally utilize sanity (details in the "Robotic Restrictions" section of this guide.

Food Energy Values
The amount of energy restored by a given food that WX78 eats is determined in the following ways:
  • Foods restore the same amount of base energy as they normally would hunger.
  • Foods that would normally damage your health reduce energy restored by the same amount, while foods that normally restore health do not restore any extra energy.
  • Foods that normally reduce sanity can be eaten without consequence, but sanity-restoring foods provide no extra benefit.
  • Monster-based foods restore half as much energy as they would hunger. WX78 can eat monster foods without penalty, but it's not an efficient food source like it is for Webber.
Using our other mod Synchronized Food Values is highly recommended to prevent any potential confusion regarding the energy values of food, especially when they are modified further by other upgrades.

Understanding The Energy Meter
The notches on the sides of the energy meter indicate WX78's overall energy drain rate in three ways:
  • The position of the notches (lower = less energy drain, higher = more energy drain).
  • The frequency of the sparks (faster sparks = more energy drain). Note that the sparks also occur whenever energy is gained or lost.
  • The color that the circular rim of the meter flashes when it sparks. The color signifies the current drain rate as a percentage of the maximum possible energy drain rate (all systems enabled and upgraded to max):
    • Green --> 0% - 25% (low drain)
    • Yellow --> 25% - 50% (medium drain)
    • Orange --> 50% - 75% (high drain)
    • Red --> 75% - 100% (critical drain)
    Care should be taken to keep the pulses either green or yellow. Staying in the orange for an extended period of time is difficult, and red is unsustainable.
Meltdowns
A meltdown is WX78's unique way of dying. When its energy reaches zero, it can no longer maintain stabilization and its reactor explodes in dramatic fashion. This explosion deals 200 damage to nearby players and enemies, destroys most structures and plants, sends nearby items flying, and doesn't spawn a skeleton. This can theoretically be used as an offensive kamikaze option, but it's somewhat inefficient because meltdowns also cause two of WX78's systems to break.

To give nearby players a chance to get out of the way, there is a short delay before the explosion occurs, along with a visual indicator of the explosion's range on the ground. In addition, the explosion damage is mitigated by armor.

While under 15% energy, the screen will experience visual glitches that will worsen as energy approaches zero to serve as a warning of an impending meltdown. These effects can be disabled in the mod's configuration settings, although it comes at the cost of low energy being less noticeable.
Wetness and Lightning
Besides energy management, Wetness is WX78's most significant weakness. It poses the greatest risk to unprepared players, and its mechanics have a few nuances in this mod that make it different from other characters. Here are the key takeaways:
  • Wetness causes a constant energy drain that gets worse the more WX78's wetness rises. This energy drain ranges from 0.67 energy/sec at minimum wetness (about half the health loss from starving for normal characters), to 3.33 energy/sec at maximum wetness (about 2.5x the health loss from starving for normal characters). This damage is significant, but can be lowered via upgrades.

  • As wetness drains energy, it will periodically cause a short-circuit that briefly stuns WX78 and disables one of its systems. Short-circuits occur each time wetness drains a total of 10 energy. This is visualized by the moisture meter: the wire moves downward as wetness drains energy, and when it touches the water a short-circuit is triggered and the wire resets.
  • The Insulator will never be disabled by a short-circuit unless it's the only remaining enabled system (or not at all with the appropriate upgrade). Lightning is not nearly as merciful and will break systems without discrimination.
  • WX78's maximum wetness has been decreased to 30.This makes it easier to recognize the severity of the current wetness level, as there are no arbitrary caps. For WX78, maximum wetness can and will be reached in a reasonable period of time without proper water protection.

Lightning
Without the proper upgrades, being struck by lightning will cause one or two of WX78's systems to instantly break at random. Being struck by lightning while all systems are broken will result in an immediate meltdown.

Tips
  • The player's current waterproofness percentage is shown underneath the Insulator System on the system display menu. This percentage updates in real time based on any factors that impact waterproofness. Aim for 100% to prevent taking on any water.
  • Water protection should be a top priority from the start of the game, if not the top priority. Even a brief Autumn rain can be a serious obstacle for WX78.
  • Always bring water protection when boating. Waves and poorly timed rowing can quickly lead to a catastrophe. You do not want a meltdown to occur on a boat.
  • Reaching maximum wetness likely means that you're already dead. Short-circuits will occur every 3 seconds and frequently disrupt actions, making it very difficult to recover from. Take care not to let wetness reach that point.
  • Systems that are upgraded more have a greater chance to be disabled or broken randomly than unupgraded systems.
Robotic Restrictions
WX78 is limited in a few ways compared to other characters, primarily in order to balance its energy stat. Chief of these restrictions is the inability to build or use any magic items, including anything that is crafted using a Prestihatitator or Shadow Manipulator. The "magic" tab cannot even be accesed from the crafting menu.

As an exception, WX78 can use Pan Flutes and haunt Life Giving Amulets to resurrect, but it still cannot craft either of these items. This magic restriction doesn't apply to Ancient Pseudoscience either, except for gem staves and amulets. Rare gems are utilized by WX78 in high-tier upgrades instead.

Iridescent Gem
Another important exception to the magic item restriction is the Star Caller's Staff. This can still be crafted (but not used) because it is required for progression through the Ancient Archives. The process to transform the Star Caller's Staff is the same, but an alternate method was implemented for WX78 to deconstruct the Moon Caller's Staff and receive the Iridescent Gem. Using a Green Electrogem on a Moon Caller Staff that is inserted into the moon pedestal will "deconstructize" the staff after a few seconds, causing a small explosion and sending the Iridescent Gem flying. The G.E.M.erator Reactor upgrade is required for this process as it is needed to craft the Green Electrogem (more information on this upgrade is in the "Reactor" section of this guide). Like all other staves, the Moon Caller's Staff cannot be directly used by WX78.

Other Restrictions
To prevent breaking WX78's core mechanic (energy management through the strategic disabling of its systems) it is not able to equip any items that would lower its base energy drain rate (e.g. the Hibearnation Vest). In addition, it is not able to sleep using bedrolls or tents, not that it would provide any benefit to do so without sanity.
System Display Menu
The system display menu, shown below, is accessed in-game by clicking the new button on the top right of the screen, below WX78's energy meter (or just press 'Z'). From this menu you can monitor WX78's systems, enable/disable them, as well as view, install, and uninstall upgrades. To close the system display menu, you can click the button again, press 'Z', or press 'ESC'.

The button underneath the energy meter that opens the system display menu also serves as a miniature version. Just by looking at it, you can easily determine which systems are enabled, disabled, and broken, as well as their upgrade levels and whether disabled systems have broken even (saved more energy than it costs to re-enable).

Because wetness is such a crucial mechanic to be wary of when playing WX78, the player's current waterproofness percentage is shown underneath the Insulator System on the system display menu. This percentage updates in real time based on any factors that impact waterproofness. Aim for 100% to prevent taking on any water.

Navigating the Menu
Hovering over one of the various systems will expand the menu. From here, you can click on one of the two buttons to either look at the upgrades for that system or enable/disable it. The icon on the system will also change to a battery and indicate how much energy that system is currently draining. In the below example, the Imaging System is currently unupgraded (level 0) and enabled, so the system is only draining base energy.

The color of the border around each system indicates its current level at a glance (and thus also its energy drain by association, unless it's disabled). Green means the system is level 0, with no upgrades, up to red which indicates that the system is max level, with all upgrades.

Be Prepared

When installing/uninstalling/enabling/disabling, a loading screen will appear for a few seconds before the operation is complete. During this time you can click the cancel button or press 'ESC' to abort the operation and return to the system display menu. The system display menu can't be opened if WX78 is in complete darkness (without night vision), knocked out, dead, or in combat, and it will automatically close (and cancel any pending operations) if any of these conditions become true.

Here is an example video showing the system display menu in use:

Disabling Systems

Disabling a system will prevent it from draining any energy at the cost of temporarily losing the effects of any installed upgrades in that system and applying a debuff. Systems cost 5 energy to enable with an extra 5 for each upgrade installed in it. For this reason, you are encouraged to leave systems disabled for longer periods of time. Hovering the mouse over the big power button will tell you how much energy it will cost you to re-enable the system after you disable it.

You can tell if a disabled system has broken even (saved more energy than it costs to re-enable) based on the color of the border on the system icon. When a system is disabled, it will flash dark red with a grey border. Once the system has been disabled long enough that it has saved more energy than the enable cost, the border will return to it's normal color. In the example below, the reactor on the left has not broken even, while the one on the right has. In general, you should try to only re-enable systems that have a colored border to avoid wasting energy. The time for a system to break even varies but is usually within the realm of 3-4 minutes.

Finally, it should be noted that systems are generally disabled manually by the player, but they can be disabled involuntarily by short-circuits caused by water (more details on that in the "Wetness and Lightning" section of this guide).
Broken Systems
Systems can be broken if WX78 dies or is struck by lightning. Broken systems are indicated by the system icon being black and unresponsive. A disabled system is functionally the same as a disabled one, the key difference being that a System Repair Tool must be used to fix it, rather than just enabling it in the system display menu. System Repair Tools, are single-use items that repair one random system when used. Higher level systems are more likely to be randomly chosen, just like how higher level systems are more likely to break in the first place. System Repair Tools must be crafted and are found under the character and tool filters in the crafting menu.

Upgrading Systems
Each system contains three upgrades: a tier 1 upgrade, a tier 2 upgrade, and a tier 3 upgrade. All upgrades follow the same general pattern with regard to ingredients depending on tier:
  1. One Component item (Electrical Doodad for tier 1, Gears for tier 2, Frazzled Wires for tier 3)
  2. One unique ingredient.
  3. An amount of energy (25 for tier 1, 50 for tier 2, 100 for tier 3)

WX78 enters The Constant with a single Electrical Doodad, meaning you get one tier 1 upgrade before a science machine is required. The drop rate for Frazzled Wires when generating a random trinket has been decrease by 50%, but all bosses are 100% guaranteed to drop one on death for each nearby WX78 player (this includes Treeguards).

Installing an upgrade will increase the amount of energy that a system drains over time. In order to install an upgrade, you must meet a few requirements:
  • The system must be enabled (not disabled or broken).
  • You must have all of the ingredients, including the necessary energy.
  • You must have all of the prerequisite upgrades installed in the system. Upgrades must be installed in order based on tier, with tier 1 being first.

Uninstalling Upgrades
Disabling systems being an all-or-nothing mechanic is intended to maintain balance, even when WX78 is highly upgraded. Uninstalling upgrades is generally not recommended because you aren't refunded any of the materials, but if you chose to do so the only requirement is that you must uninstall them in reverse order, highest tier to lowest tier.

Upgrade Strategy
Right now, all upgrades add the same amount of extra energy drain regardless of tier (so installing a tier 3 upgrade in one system is the same as installing a tier 1 upgrade in another, from an energy drain perspective). Despite this, going tall (upgrading few systems more) is generally easier to manage than going wide (upgrading many systems less). This is because high level systems give a lot bang for their buck when disabling them. Even if a system is fully upgraded, you can always disable it when you're not using it and get rid of all of the extra drain. Having multiple upgrades spread out means that you will need more systems disabled at once to get the same decrease in passive energy drain.
System Details
The next seven sections of this guide will explain each of WX78's systems and the upgrades within. After explaining the detailed effects of each system and upgrade, a short developer note entitled "Assessment" is included to discuss potential strategies and give tips on when systems should be disabled, how upgrades can be used, etc. If you are only interested in the detailed effects and would rather discover your own strategies, then you can skip those notes.

Computer

Details
The Computer contains upgrades that improve crafting ability, allowing the creation of items using only energy, saving both time and resources. Disabling the Computer will cause all crafting recipes to require twice as many items (basically the opposite of a Construction Amulet). Attempting to craft something with the Computer disabled will require a confirmation to prevent wasting resources on accident.

Assessment
You ideally want to keep your Computer disabled whenever you don't plan on crafting anything for a while, but this is one of the more difficult systems to manage precisely because it can be very difficult to make that prediction. When playing WX78, you always need to be planning for the future and building items in advance while your Computer is still enabled, otherwise you'll be forced to eat the energy cost from re-enabling too soon or waste resources. A good idea is to always keep a campfire prebuilt- it is often beneficial to disable your Computer when going out into the wilderness for a specific purpose, but you don't want to be caught out there having to build a campfire from scratch at night.

Upgrades

Tier 1

Details
The Basic Fabricator adds a number of unique recipes for various items that are crafted using only energy. These recipes are separate from their normal recipes, and are found under the character filter on the far left side of the crafting menu. The fabrication process itself uses a special crafting animation that takes a few seconds longer than a standard craft. The recipes added are:
  • Electrical Doodad --> 30 Energy
  • Rope --> 20 Energy
  • Boards --> 30 Energy
  • Spear --> 30 Energy
  • Shovel --> 20 Energy
  • Backpack --> 50 Energy
  • Alchemy Engine --> 150 Energy

Assessment
This is an incredibly valuable upgrade early on that drops off in usefulness a bit as time goes on. Being able to create an Alchemy Engine out of thin air as early as day two (while foraging food sources are still abundant) is incredibly strong, especially if you don't have a Wickerbottom on your team. Even without creating an Alchemy Engine, it's still useful to create commonly used early game items that would normally require settling down with a science machine. In particular, this upgrade lets you source additional Electrical Doodads for other tier 1 upgrades prior to creating a science machine. After the early days are over the Basic Fabricator still proves useful as a convenient way to get common resource items like rope and boards using surplus food.

Tier 2

Details
The Advanced Fabricator is functionally identical to the Basic Fabricator, it just expands the recipe list with the following items:
  • Gears --> 50 Energy
  • Cut Stone --> 50 Energy
  • Marble --> 50 Energy
  • Papyrus --> 50 Energy
  • Ice --> 25 Energy
  • Football Helmet --> 75 Energy
  • Morning Star --> 150 Energy

Assessment
The main appeal of this upgrade is the ability to craft gears, especially on a team with multiple players playing WX78 or in a shortage of clockworks. The Advanced Fabricator alone can source the gears for every other tier 2 upgrade, and it also adds quick and renewable methods to gain certain items that are otherwise slow to get. In addition, fabricating Football helmets and Morning Stars actually makes it quite a decent indirect combat upgrade.

Tier 3

Details
The Molecular Replicator remembers the last item that you've crafted and gives you a special recipe (also under the character filter) to craft that item again using only energy. You can only replicate the item once and then the recipe disappears. The recipe also disappears if you craft a different item or disable the Computer. The replication energy cost varies depending on the technology level of the item:
  • No Prototype and Cartography Desk items --> 5 Energy
  • Science Machine, Think Tank, Tackle Receptacle, and Terra Firma Tamper items --> 10 Energy
  • Alchemy Engine items --> 25 Energy
  • Broken Ancient Pseudoscience Station and Celestial items --> 50 Energy
  • Ancient Pseudoscience Station, Boss, and Blueprint items --> 100 Energy

Assessment
The Molecular Replicator is the pinnacle of resource conservation, rivaling even the Construction Amulet due to its permanence. On first glance, it seems like this upgrade would be best utilized on rare, expensive items, but unlike the Construction Amulet it's also quite cost effective even when using it with the mundane. The energy cost to replicate lower level items is much cheaper than both the Basic and Advanced fabricators. Unfortunately, character-specific items are not eligible to be replicated, so this upgrade doesn't combo with other upgrades that grant crafting recipes such as for Electrogems or Scanning Platforms.
Imaging

Details
The Imaging System contains upgrades that improve your ability to see and explore. Disabling the Imaging System will cause the map to become inaccessible (even with the Minimap mod) and the screen to appear in black and white, similar to ghost form. It even makes waypoints from the Waypoint mod invisible.

Assessment
It's pretty clear that the best time to disable your Imaging System is when you're planning on sticking around your base for a while, because not having access to your map makes navigation in the wilderness a nightmare. While a black and white filter may seem purely cosmetic, it can inhibit your situational awareness because the lowered contrast makes things difficult to spot and track, especially in fast-paced combat.

Upgrades

Tier 1

Details
A-1 Photoreceptors provide a sort of in-between night vision by making complete darkness just a little bit brighter for WX78, while also granting immunity to attacks from Charlie. It's functionally the same as having night vision if you can deal with things being a little harder to see than with Moggles. This upgrade also allows you to access the system display menu while in the dark.

Assessment
True to the Imaging System's exploratory nature, this upgrade is great for early-game exploration as it lets WX78 keep going at full speed throughout the night, without the need to setup a camp or burn through torches. It's somewhat limited by your luck in finding cave entrances on the first day, however, compared to some of the more easily accessible tier 1 upgrades. Nothing else really needs to be said, though. It's great throughout the whole game, who wouldn't want night vision?

Tier 2

Details
Scan-O-Vision gives you a unique crafting recipe for a Scanning Platform (located under the character filter) that costs 1 Gear, 2 Electrical Doodads, and 2 Cut Stone. After it's built, the Scanning Platform will be permanently linked to the WX78 that created it- even if another WX78 has this upgrade, they won't be able to use it (basically, each WX78 must build their own Scanning Platform). In addition, you can only ever build one Scanning Platform per server, (you can also have one in the caves), You can always hammer it and build it elsewhere if you need to move it, though. To use Scan-O-Vision, right-click on your Scanning Platform- WX78 will then hop on the platform and allow you to freely control your vision separate from your character and very fast speeds. To end it, you can click the cancel button in the middle of the screen, or press 'ESC'.

Assessment
Scan-O-Vision is one of my personal favorite upgrades from a design standpoint. If you haven't found everything you wanted to by the time you install this, then congratulations- you just found it! It hardly needs to be said that the exploration potential of this upgrade is unmatched, and it doesn't even cost any energy to use. It can even explore across the oceans. Rushing this as soon as possible to maximize the exploratory gains is definitely a legitimate strategy, and it can be a lot of fun to build the Scanning Platform on a boat. The main drawback of this upgrade is the fact that you're kind of a sitting duck while using it- you can and will be attacked if an enemy happens across your body.

Tier 3

Details
The Tele-Beam Satellite allows WX78 to initiate a one-way teleport to the location that it's currently viewing with Scan-O-Vision. Tele-beaming costs energy to use, at a rate of about 1 Energy per 5 units of distance (0.8 Energy per tile), maxing out at 250 Energy. In addition, a visual field is formed around the Scanning Platform while WX78 is tele-beaming- other players can stand within this field to be teleported as well, for no additional energy cost!

Assessment
Because the tele-beam cost caps out at 250 Energy, this means that you will need to combo it with the Giga Battery upgrade from the Reactor System in order to teleport an unlimited distance (base WX78 only has 200 max energy). Though, even without Giga Battery you are able to theoretically tele-beam up to 250 tiles away, which is still crazy far. The upgrade is specifically designed not to create efficient back-and-forth transportation between two points, since you can only build one Scanning Platform. It's excellent as a deployment tool though- if there's somewhere you need to go outside of your base, you can effectively cut your travel time in half and avoid any obstacles/enemies in the process (just be sure you can make it back on foot!).
Reactor

Details
The Reactor contains upgrades that improve energy capacity and restoration. Disabling the Reactor will cause food eaten to restore 50% less energy. Attempting to eat with the Reactor disabled will require a confirmation to prevent accidentally wasting food.

Assessment
The Reactor mainly serves as a way to help satisfy WX78's increasing energy needs as more and more upgrades are installed. For this reason, its likely not a system that should be invested in early. In general, you'll want to keep your Reactor disabled in between meals when it's not being used, though the tricky part comes when you have to eat something unexpectedly. It's fairly easy to play this way early on, as long as you don't take unexpected damage, but as the game goes on it can be difficult to time this correctly (primarily due to how many additional ways WX78 can consume energy on the fly through upgrades and abilities).

Upgrades

Tier 1

Details
The Toxin Metabolizer allows WX78 to consume spoiled foods without penalty (this is no longer part of its base character), and it also increases the energy value of food the more it has perished: stale food restores 10% more energy when eaten, and spoiled food restores 20% more. Not only that, it also lets WX78 consume rot and spoiled fish for 10 energy each.

Assessment
This upgrade is probably the worst tier 1 upgrade for the early game, just because food is all fresh and abundant at that stage. However, after a bit it will definitely start to carry its own weight, especially as WX78's energy needs continue to grow. If you play your cards right and only eat food once it's spoiled, that 20% bonus really starts to add up. This also frees up gears for more upgrades instead of an Ice Box! Rot restoring 10 energy when eaten is a nice source of non-perishable backup food in case of an emergency.

Tier 2

Details
Giga Battery increases WX78's maximum energy to 300. This effect persists even if the Reactor is disabled, but not if it's broken.

Assessment
This upgrade is pretty straightforward and should definitely be a priority for anyone playing WX78, regardless of strategy. Because you keep the max energy increase even while disabled, the upgrade is essentially free in terms of energy drain and it allows you to keep your Reactor disabled for longer periods of time between meals, which adds up in energy savings over time. The increased max energy is also very useful for combat, since energy doubles as WX78's health.

Tier 3

Details
The G.E.M.erator Reactor allows WX78 to craft Electrogems that can be socketed (equipped in the armor slot) to restore energy over time and have a variety of other effects depending on the color. The net amount of energy restored is equal in magnitude to the drain of a level 3 Reactor, so another way to look at it is that Electrogems invert the Reactor to produce energy instead of draining it.

All Electrogems require 1 Electrical Doodad, 10 Energy, and the appropriate colored gem to craft. Like all other upgrade recipes, they are located under the character filter in the crafting menu. All Electrogems have a duration of 2 days before crumbling to ash and they degrade over time while activated. Electrogem effects are only active if the G.E.M.erator Reactor is active- disabling the Reactor or uninstalling the upgrade renders them useless.

Each color of Electrogem has a unique perk that assist WX78 in gaining energy in some way.
  • Red Electrogems cause WX78 to deal 2x damage to large game animals such as Beefalo, Koalefants, and Volt Goats. In addition, Koalefants will attack WX78 on sight.
  • Blue Electrogems freeze any spoiled foods in WX78's inventory, completely stopping further perishing until unsocketed.
  • Purple Electrogems allow WX78 to eat monster meat-based foods without penalty.
  • Yellow Electrogems restore twice as much energy over time as other Electrogems.
  • Green Electrogrems produce leftovers whenever WX78 eats. Leftovers are food items that take a long time to perish, have 25% of the energy value of whatever food was eaten, and can be freely combined with other leftovers.
  • Orange Electrogems allow WX78 to microwave foods in a Crock Pot. Microwaved foods cook in only 3 seconds and have and are immediately spoiled when they finish.

    Assessment
    If you find yourself struggling to keep your energy up, or you want to be more ambitious with the number of upgrades you have, the G.E.M.erator Reactor is the best possible upgrade that you could get to increase your energy production. While expensive in terms of gems, the amount of energy that it gives is unmatched, as long as you can keep it supplied. The fact that WX78 can't build or use magic items with gems makes it a bit easier to source them, though you might be competing with Winona- WX78 isn't the only one who knows how to extract energy from gems.
Insulator

Details
The Insulator contains upgrades that improve resistance to wetness and lightning. Disabling the Insulator will apply a major penalty to waterproofness, rendering water-protective equipment useless and significantly increasing the rate at which wetness accumulates. The Insulator also has a hidden perk in that it can't be disabled by short-circuits unless it's the only enabled system. As detailed in the "Wetness and Lightning" section, short-circuits cause a brief stun and disable one of WX78's systems.

Assessment
Disabling the Insulator at the start of the game is a trap that has gotten me killed multiple times. It may seem like a free disable as long as it isn't raining, but do so at your own risk. With the Insulator disabled, even the lightest Autumn drizzle feels like the heaviest Spring downpour. The water will build up fast, you'll need pretty decent reaction time to re-enable it quick enough and you'd better pray that you're not in combat in that moment or it's basically game over. All of this assumes that you have the means to get 100% waterproofness and dry off afterwards, though, otherwise it's also likely game over. So with that being said, when should you disable your Insulator? Well, the dead of winter is pretty much a freebie, but other than that, here's a handy checklist. Ask yourself:
  • If it started raining right now, would I have time to re-enable my Insulator quick enough?
  • Do I have the means to reach 100% waterpoofness and dry off afterwards?
If the answers to both of those were "yes" then go for it, otherwise you're gambling with your life, regardless of the season.

Upgrades

Tier 1

Details
Watertight Components reduces the energy drain caused by wetness by 50%, increases drying rate by a constant amount, and prevents the Insulator from ever being disabled by short-circuits, even if it's the last enabled system. Because short-circuits are only triggered after wetness has drained 10 energy, this upgrade also doubles the time it takes for a short-circuit to occur.

Assessment
I cannot be overstated how devastating water is to WX78 in this mod. Getting water protection is one of, if not the biggest priority for WX78 at the start of the game, regardless of season. While this upgrade isn't super flashy, it's quick and easy to acquire, and it's enough protection to get you through some light Autumn rains at the start of the game so you can focus on other tasks. It's also just a very good contingency plan for water-related disasters. While not super common, if you're ever in the situation where all of your other systems are disabled in the rain, and your Insulator finally gets disabled too, it's almost impossible to come back from that point because you'll take on water so fast that re-enabling it will almost instantly cause it to be disabled again. Watertight Components completely nullifies that scenario, since the Insulator can't be disabled by water. In fact, with this upgrade it becomes a viable strategy to disable everything but your Insulator in the rain, get under a tree, and just wait it out. It'll hurt a little, but it's better than many alternatives (unless it's Spring, then this will 100% kill you).

As an additional note, the increased drying rate isn't that noticeable when standing next to a fire, instead the main benefit is that it lets you dry fairly quickly without any external heat sources, whereas normally the wetness would just kind of stay there forever while you slowly die.

Tier 2

Details
Hydrophobic Sealant gives WX78 a flat 70% increase to waterproofness.

Assessment
This one is fairly self-explanatory, it just makes it easier to reach 100% waterproofness. With this upgrade, standing under a tree will protect you completely from the rain. It gives you a lot more flexibility: a single Rain Hat, a single Pretty Parasol, any hat + any vest, etc. will all get you to 100%. Very convenient to have during Spring in particular but not overly necessary if you have a Rain Coat or Eyebrella. It's worth noting that this upgrade does not insulate you against lightning, so you should still be wary of that (this upgrade + Rain Hat is the ideal combo that also protects against lightning).

Tier 3

Details
Z.A.P Coil grants ability to discharge energy in a ranged electrical attack by right-clicking on a target (CTRL + right-click to force attack friendlies). This attack costs 5 energy to use and deals 50 damage. In addition, this upgrade also grants electrical insulation as though WX78 was wearing a Rain Hat or Rain Coat, as well as ability to overcharge when struck by lightning. Overcharging gives all of WX78's melee attacks the electric stimuli, increasing damage dealt by 1.5x (more against wet targets). Overcharge lasts until the next time Z.A.P. Coil is used, and it will discharge an entire lightning bolt that deals 500 damage.

Assessment
I know it's not efficient, but zapping butterflies is so much fun.
Stabilizer

Details
The Stabilizer contains upgrades that improve effectiveness in combat and defense against attacks. Disabling the Stabilizer will cause attacks against WX78 to drain twice as much energy. In non-technobabble talk, you take double damage.

Meaningless Non-Canon Mod Lore Fun Fact: This is what keeps WX78 alive without the need for health! Handle with care.

Assessment
This is probably the most straightforward system. Gonna fight? Enable it! Not gonna fight? Disable it! Disabled and now you're in a fight anyway? Run away! It's worth recalling that you can't access the system display menu at all once you're already in combat, so at that point it's too late. If you're a super pro fighter like me who never ever gets hit, then you could just leave it disabled in combat anyway and enjoy the free energy savings (until you lagspike and get one-shot).

Upgrades

Tier 1

Details
Efficient Stabilizer causes WX78 to lose 33% less energy when attacked. In other words, combat damage received is reduced by 33%.

Assessment
It's probably not worth the energy to keep it enabled all the time, but keep it in your back pocket for a hound wave or boss fight and it's pretty decent at keeping you alive for longer. Remember that each point of damage negated saves you food, and it adds up if you get hit often.

Tier 2

Details
Discharge Stabilizer causes enemies that attack WX78 to get shocked (doesn't deal damage) and panic as if haunted for their normal attack period + 1 second (minimum of 2 seconds, maximum of 4 seconds). Note that not all enemies can panic. This upgrade also completely negates hitstun when WX78 is attacked.

Assessment
This upgrade turns WX78 into the ultimate face-tanker, especially against large groups of smaller, frequently attacking enemies. You can charge into a large group of spiders for example, disperse them, and just start mashing uninterrupted while taking very little damage in the process. It's noticeably less good against large attackers with long attack delays and enemies that can't panic, but still not useless.

Tier 3

Details
Stabilization Polymer is a goo-like terrain effect that is automatically deployed in combat and slows enemies that walk on it by 33%. It also repairs the armor (both head and body) of WX78 and other friendly players by 1% every second while they're standing in it.

Assessment
Now this is the ultimate face-tanking ability. Basically everything I mentioned for Discharge Stabilizer applies here too, except now it also slows the enemies and repairs armor, so you take even less damage. The slow effect can even be used to improve kiting as well. One of the main drawbacks of face-tanking is the wasted armor durability, which is no longer an issue with Stabilization Polymer. Your armor will never break again!
Servos

Details
The Servos System contains upgrades that improve action speed and inventory storage capacity. Disabling the Servos System will reduce inventory slots by 3 and slow general action speed to a crawl (about twice as long). This includes actions like picking, harvesting, cooking, building, etc. (pretty much anything that uses the generic long action animation).

Assessment
Generally, the same criteria to disable the Imaging System also applies here- staying home, base management duties. The slow actions can be annoying but aren't that bad unless you're actively gathering resources, and the same goes for the reduced inventory size. This ones more up to preference than anything and the ideal time to disable is somewhat nebulous.

Upgrades

Tier 1

Details
Precision Servos lets WX78 perform actions 3x faster than normal. The actions that this applies to are the exact same as ones slowed by the Servos System disabled debuff.

Assessment
This is an amazing upgrade to have during the early game, speeding up resource gathering and base setup significantly. It shines at any time resource gathering is needed, and even when doing chores around the base, though it does not affect work speed (e.g. mining, chopping).

Tier 2

Details
Reinforced Storage gives WX78 five additional inventory slots and also grants immunity to item stealing (enemies that make you drop items, like frogs).

Assessment
The extra inventory slots can be very nice while out in the wilderness, but they aren't super useful while working around your base unless you tend to hoard items in your inventory. Still, being able to carry extra items back with you makes it great for resource runs, and watching frogs fail to steal you stuff is quite satisfying.

Tier 3

Details
With the Dimensional Minimizer, 5 energy can be used to minimize storage containers by right-clicking them, turning them into an items that can be carried around in the inventory. They can be maximized by left-clicking the item and then left-clicking anywhere in the world. After maximizing the container it will have exactly the same items as before, in the same states. Minimized containers can be put inside other containers, which can then also be minimized. Backpacks are also minimizeable. Containers will automatically be maximized if dropped, but if they land in water they will be lost forever.

Assessment
This is my personal favorite upgrade, and not just because it looks cool. The Dimensional Minimizer is the pinnacle of storage technology, theoretically allowing for infinite storage using weird recursive mechanics, given enough energy. A single chest could potentially contain 9 other minimized chests, which could each contain 9 more minimized chests, and so on! Good luck keeping track of what's what, though. It's worth noting that while only a WX78 with the Dimensional Minimizer can actually minimize containers, the resulting items can be traded and anyone is able to maximize them without cost (even yourself, if you disable the Servos System).

The Dimensional Minimizer has a number of other synergies that go beyond additional storage, though. Without spoiling anything, all I'll say is that the items within the minimized containers are essentially frozen in time as long as the container is minimized. When you maximize it, they will be exactly the same as the moment you minimized it.
Motor

Details
The Motor contains upgrades that improve movement speed and give more movement options. Disabling the Motor will apply a -25% penalty to movement speed.

Assessment
Similarly to the Servos System, when to disable the Motor mostly comes down to personal preference and how much you care about being slow. Obviously I'd recommend to enable it if you're going to be doing a lot of traveling or combat, otherwise it's mostly just a luxury.

Upgrades

Tier 1

Details
Hydrostatic Inverter allows WX78 to run on water as long as you keep moving. Stopping for even a
moment will immediately result in WX78 falling into the water.

Assessment
This upgrade is very valuable for early game exploration and efficient travel, and it continues to be a convenience well into the late game. Be very careful when running on water for extended distances, as turning wrong or stopping to pickup an item can both easily cause you to fall into the water (needless to say, that is devastating for WX78 and will likely result in a meltdown). When turning, make sure a directional key is pressed at all times (assuming that you're using a keyboard), or just use the mouse click and hold to move.

Tier 2

Details
The Overcharge Motor grants WX78 a movement speed bonus as long as you keep running. After running for 3 seconds, the speed bonus is increased by 15%. After 3 more seconds, the speed bonus is increased to 30%. Finally, after 3 more seconds (a total of 9) the speed bonus is increased to 50%. Stopping at any point will remove the speed bonus entirely, and it must be built back up again from the beginning.

Assessment
This upgrade is primarily good for long distance travel, getting from point A to point B as fast as possible without stopping. It speeds things up a lot, but it can't really be leveraged in combat or when preforming frequent actions like gathering resources do to the long charging build up that is required.

Tier 3

Details
The Telelocation Drive can be used to teleport to a nearby location by right-clicking at the cost of 2 energy. It's functionally identical to Wortox's soul hop, except that you'll probably die if you use it too much. In addition, after teleporting the Overcharge Motor is immediately set to maximum speed (+50%), bypassing the long charging build up.

Assessment
The teleporting ability is obviously nice, though somewhat dangerous if you get into the habit of using it often. Being able to get maximum speed from the Overcharge Motor on demand is where this upgrade really shines though, as it allows you to leverage the speed boost in combat, while gathering resources, just all sorts of scenarios, making everything in general go a lot faster.

Is there a way to actually fight fuel weaver? His invulnerability phase requires insanity to counteract, and I see no way of doing this
