(4 - 4) Kursk: Operation Zitadelle

The Battle of Kursk was the biggest tank battle in history!
The battle of Kursk took place on the eastern front near Kursk, from July to August 1943.

The Soviets under the command of General Zhukov, sent in 1.3 million men, 3600 tanks and 2400 aircrafts. The Germans attacked with over 800 000 men, 2700 tanks and 1800 aircrafts. General Zhukovs plan was to hold the line, then strike back. The Soviets had 2 months to prepare the defenses, while the Germans were waiting for their new tanks: Panther V and Tiger Tanks.

The Germans under the command of General Erich von Manstein, were planning an encirclement of the enemy from two sides simultaneously. The battle finally began in the night of 5th July 1943, after the Soviets forced the Germans to attack.
