So you wanna play multiplayer well here's what you do.
Step 1 Switch to the beta in steam once you on the beta build you can play multiplayer.
Step 2 Open the game and click connect.

Alright your in look around neat isn't it.
OK stop looking your in a mining ship your objective is to find a place to call home plop down your player station and get some xp.
Best way to get xp is to mine.
My personal fav is ice asteroids as they are 100% ice and so no worrying about moving your ship to hit the next deposit just hold you fire key and level up.
Once you've gathered some xp and hopefully some materials your next going to upgrade your ship.
At your station you can craft weapons to turn your little dingy into a killing machine.
After you have satisfied the urge for violence you should get an item that will unlock new tech use it and repeat.
