Looking at the code, this is how I think the mod works:
It adds Chlorine Tabs, Iodine, AquaFalco Water Filters, and Homemade Filters.
All of these can be used to disinfect water.
I think the percentage of the item that gets used depends on the amount of water being purified.
Chlorine Tabs and Iodine are each used directly on containers ("Disinfect with"), while filters disinfect water while transferring it to a different container ("Filter and pour into").
Iodine also works as a disinfectant for bandages and wounds.
Chlorine Tabs can be found with janitorial supplies, camping gear, and army equipment.
Iodine can be found with medical supplies and camping gear.
AquaFalco Water Filters and Water Filter Cartridges can be found with camping gear and army equipment.
To make a homemade filter, watch "VHS: Exposure Survival E8 SP" or have the Hunter trait or Former Scout trait; use a knife or scissors to cut an empty water bottle or pop bottle in half, and then add either:
Sheet of Paper/Paper Napkins + Cotton Balls + Bandage/Ripped Sheets/Sterilized Rag
OR Sand Bag + Charcoal + Bandage/Ripped Sheets/Sterilized Rag.
Both Homemade and AquaFalco filters will not be lost when used up, so you can refill them.
AquaFalco Water Filters are refilled using filter cartridges, and they take five times as much usage to become depleted compared to Homemade Filters.
Partially depleted cartridges can be removed from AquaFalco Filters. You will keep the now empty filter and the partially depleted cartridges.
You can also empty homemade filters, but you will not retrieve its contents.
I hope this information helps.
