How to set up a Combat Agent

Combat is deterministic, so there is a reliable way to ensure you can kill any hero.

The Chassis
In order to get a good combat agent, you need at least 3 command and a lot of martial. The agent contenders here are the baroness (free rats are the strongest agent killer tactic), the cursed (petrify is -2 atk and def and she gains +1 stats after killing her nemesis), and orc warlord in case somehow those are dead. Maybe some others could do it too if they gained stats but these seem like the best options to me.
"I can't tank a paladin" - doesn't matter
The 3 command is for rats to fill out all of the slots. These will die in 1 hit against anything worthwhile, but that doesn't matter since they only need to take one hit anyway.

Combat works like this every round
Attacker - hits middle minion, or defender if empty
Defender - hits middle minion, or attacker if empty
Minions - hits the enemy minion opposite to them, or attacker/defender if opposite slot is empty
A chance for either side to retreat

All overkill is lost, so 15 attack hit will not do more than kill a single rat - this is their value. A goblin could fulfill the same role, maybe an orc can be useful if you already have the command for it but it probably is better to raise your martial instead of investing to get more than 3 command.

A special mention to corrupted heroes as they keep their minions even though don't have a way to restock special ones like knights and paladins. In this case, it may be worthwhile to be a little more careful to keep them alive and to rest sometimes to recover their health as they are powerful.
2 Hands are Enough for 3 Axes
The 3 item slots to fill should be to gain as much martial as possible to raise the combat agent's attack. He only has one chance to hit the enemy if they have a middle minion before he takes damage, which means enough damage must be had to one shot the enemy when dealing with very powerful opponents who bring 2 knights and a paladin. The war axe grants +3 martial, but it often isn't easy to do this so the +1 martial axe will be useful too. Refreshing markets on a high prosperity place is a decent way to get war axes. Coastal markets free from unrest and etc are ideal.

If set up correctly, the agent who must be on the attack - this won't work so well when defending - will kill the enemy in the beginning of round 2.

At first you may be able to manage the menace and profile from killing heroes through laying low, but eventually an abyssal city from the deep ones will be needed to hide at since either too many heroes come at once or they will gain a cavalry escort which is too hard to handle and should be avoided. With time, almost all of the world's heroes can be slain and the new ones will be very low level and probably try to disrupt your combat agent when spawning - basically begging for you to kill them. The baroness with rat minions can kill far more rapidly due to not needing to rest or recruit new minions between battles.

One of the events for killing can cause 50% shadow in a relative, which is rather nice.

Note: Baroness' rat power has been heavily nerfed. It fills in a rat every five turns, now.

3 faceless servitors can fight pretty much forever. The servitors have so much defense they pretty much never take damage, and even if they do they are completely free to rehire. Just need a little death.

Tbh, I think combat is a little too easy right now.

Unfortunately, eventually you get swamped to the point you can't rest/restock and therefore dies.
I assume it's possible to get your hero to 300 profile and 600 menace and then run around the border of the map. I once got a warlord that high due to starting the killing spree with the +2 stats water and 3 ogres, but I didn't think of running around to waste everyone's time permanently.

I'm glad you posted this. I will need to update this guide.

You should use rats from an infiltrated city (from the docks?) instead of sellswords, they can be acquired in 1 turn and are free. Goblins from orcs are also free but take 2 turns, useful to keep around on your orc warlords in general though.
I feel like the cursed is worse and more unwieldly than an orc but that's just me. I only ever use her as a spawn-anywhere suicide attacker to block a heroes action.

You totally don't need to do this, just rush for the baroness and have her kill everything. The only combat power that matters in the game is her rat power, because it lets you do multiple rounds of combat a turn rather then having to fuck off every five seconds when your middle rank dies and cycle multiple combat heroes or whatever.

Here's how it works:
>Because you get new rats every fight, you can attack any number of heroes in a turn.
>Because the most damage you can take is the middle minion hitting you once (if you don't kill it e.g. it's a paladin and you're level 1 no items, or they have an escort) you can always flee turn 1. Losing all your minions doesn't matter because you just generate new rats. This pushes you onto a new (random) tile, which can give you a fresh list of heroes to attack.

>You don't need to kill people, just deal damage. You'll pretty much always deal damage if you're the attacker and they have no middle slot, then you can flee. Once you're not lvl 1 no items you can probably start the second round and kill them though.
>Once you have shields you don't need to be in the dark to avoid taking damage from knights/paladins turn1. Might doesn't help you here because they'll always get a fresh knight to hit you if you kill their middle rank and they have an escort, you HAVE to have 4 defense.

Dealing with escorts:
>If you attack someone with an escort and a middle slot, you can't make progress because the middle knight fills in after the baroness kills it. Don't do this.
>If an escort attacks YOU, then you'll kill the knight on the first turn and it won't fill in when you flee. Now, take the baroness and go back and attack the hero. You'll get one hit in before they fill in with a knight. In addition to you being able to kill heroes by doing this multiple times, a damaged hero will often bail to heal and then lose the escort. Once you have 13 might or whatever and can kill heroes with high HP+def this gets super trivial but I rarely wait that long to start killing.
