Hello! This guide is made to show you how to setup & how to use BEE2 (Better Extended Editor 2). I did such a guide before, the old one was really bad though, so I decided to re-make it, this time with better language, formatting & screenshots!

The BEE2 allows reconfiguring Portal 2's Puzzlemaker editor to use additional items, reskin maps for different eras, and configure many other aspects. All vanilla items have been upgraded with additional bugfixes and improvements.

I recommend using this tool, if you don't know Hammer Editor and you want to have more puzzle elements for use in the in-game puzzle creator. If you by any chance don't know how to use Hammer Editor, then I still recommend learning how to use it. There's many great tutorials for it, I'm learning how to use Hammer at the moment myself.

Part 1: Downloading & configuring for start-up BEE2
First of all, download BEE2 and the packages for it:

READ BEFORE DOWNLOADING: There are 2 packages for BEE2: Item Packages and Music Packages. Sometimes Music Packages don't get updated, so you would need to search through the site for the newest Music Package, if the package doesn't appear alongside the Item Package.

After you downloaded them, unzip the BEE2 application ZIP file into any folder that is empty AND IS ON THE SAME DRIVE AS PORTAL 2!. I'm gonna be referring to the location of the folder with the app as
C:\BEE2
After that, unzip the Item Package & Music Package into
C:\BEE2\packages
(if the folder doesn't exist, create it).
EDIT: The "C:\BEE2\packages" folder should have only files with ".bee_pack" file type! No other folders or anything else!
The Item Package contains puzzle editor elements and the Music Package contains music from other games than Portal 2 and makes you be able to listen to cutted-down versions of the available tracks.
Part 2: Configuring BEE2 with Portal 2
When you've done the first part, launch BEE2.
It should show a message box telling you to select a folder with the Portal 2 executable file. To check where it is located, go to your Steam library ➔ find Portal 2 ➔ right click on the Portal 2 ➔ click Proporties ➔ click Local Files ➔ and then click Browse....

You should be then redirected to Portal 2's installation folder. Go back then to BEE2, click OK in the message box if you haven't already and in the dialog box search for the folder with the installation of Portal 2, if you found the folder, select the PORTAL2.exe file and click OK. Next, BEE2 will ask you for the name of the game. I recommend keeping it as it already is. When you've done that, the BEE2 UI should show up:

If you've done everything right, you're ready for part 3!
Part 3: Tour around BEE2
I recommend first changing the pallete to BEEMod on the top left window. It will make some elements merge into one already.

Main Window (middle):
In the main window you can add/remove elements to the in-game puzzle editor and configure BEE2. The elements on the left side of the window will be compiled into Portal 2 puzzle editor and on the right side of the window there are elements that you can drag into the left side, and then that element will appear in the puzzle editor. You can drag elements both ways.


Pallet Window (top-left):
In that window you can save & load pallets (selected elements & selected options) for later use.
Note: To save a pallet, go to (in the main window): Pallet ➔ Save pallet


Compile option window (bottom-left):
Map settings:
In that tab you can select if you want for the player to spawn near the doors of the chamber of in the elevator of the chamber, the style of an entrance and exit for the chamber and the player model, if the map is singleplayer.

Compile settings:
Here, you can change the thumbnail of the map & the lighting quality.

Proporties of styles and elements window (bottom-right):
Styles:
Here, you can toggle proporties for specific styles.

Elements:
Here, you can toggle proporties for specific elements.


Export option window (top-right):
In this window, you can change the style, skybox, voice, elevator screens and music of the chamber, and compile the selected stuff into Portal 2. The ... button will select a thing, and the gear button will open the option window for the selected thing if it has one.
Part 4: Building the chamber
If you did setup all the elements and that stuff you then compile it into Portal 2. Click Export to "PORTAL 2"... button to compile everything into the puzzle editor. After that's done, launch Portal 2, go to the puzzle editor, make a new test chamber, and just build it! That's really it. You can also add your own music to BEE2, but that would be for another guide. Thanks for reading! I will also put some additional information about BEE2 below.
Additional information
  • BEE2 is compatible with Aperture Tag mod.
  • You can access the settings of the packages at File ➔ Manage packages...
  • You can manage backups at File ➔ Restore backups and maps

@laveig it probably couldn't find /config, there was no code for that situation, error. then it found the folder, but empty, no problem: it downloads the needed files.

I cant open it, the app need an unexisting file in appdata/roaming/config (folder doesnt exist too)
