Back to Baku (alt. 1943)

The year is 1943 and the Wehrmacht is losing the Caucasus. The overstretched and exhausted 11. Armee cover a front over 500 kilometres in length while the shattered remnants of 4. Panzerarmee holds several weakened defensive lines in front of Baku, praying for respite from the Allied advance. Hitler gives express orders: cities such as Baku and Astrakhan are to be held 'to the last man'. All the reserves have been committed and the Luftwaffe face an impossible task. The truth is obvious to all but German high command: there is no help coming.

In the midst of this STAVKA orders a massive two front offensive aimed at shutting the jaws of the 'Caucasus Trap'. As huge numbers of Soviet armies pour down towards Astrakhan and Stalingrad, the combined forces of the Transcaucasian Front and the British 10th Army will strike north and west towards Baku and the Black Sea respectively in 'Operation Mercury'. You will command this Anglo-Soviet combined force.

While the Transcaucasian Front benefits from fresh reserves and new cavalry detachments, the British 10th Army is worse off than it was last month - the ANZAC and British airborne troops have been redeployed to the Mediterranean leaving just Indian, Polish and a single British division behind. Nonetheless these troops have been reorganised and rested - they are among the finest fighting forces in the world and the battle-tested Indian armoured divisions have been focused at the weakened right flank of Manstein's army.

Without the Caspian oilfields the Wehrmacht is finished. Take back Baku and make it so commander!

While you do not have to play 'Armenian Nights' I do recommend it as it is the precursor to this scenario. This one should be a fair bit easier however! Good luck and have fun!
