By default, it's easy to waste durability; it drains passively even without getting struck. Also lightning only really occurs during humid season, and you'll likely be wearing a pith hat during that time. For the thunderbirds you can place a lightning rod near them, they don't move far away.
With this mod, you have the potential to massively boost your damage. Also being able to bundle them to preserve their charge is really handy, just the sort of stuff you can have in DST (like the pet lavae for example).
