History:
Konar Sandal is an archaeological site located in southern Iran, in Kerman, near the city of Jiroft. It was discovered in 2001, following clandestine excavations that took place in nearby Bronze Age cemeteries. The Konar Sandal site has since been the subject of regular excavations, and has proven to be the most important center of what can be called the Jiroft civilization. The discovery of clay tablets bearing two types of writing seems to bear witness to a civilization which practiced writing. Due to the large number of chlorite vases found in the nearby tombs, it is estimated that Konar Sandal must have been the main production center of these objects, which can be found throughout the Iranian Plateau, and as far as Mesopotamia, in the Indus valley and around the Persian Gulf.
