Prewar tenement building on Ki Lung Street, Prince Edward, Hong Kong. Build in 1945, demolished in 2023.

This building was part of an urban redevelopment project in 2021. Before the building was torn down and rebuilt, the developer held a small exhibition on the shop floor to display photographs and antique items. The pillars of the building also had words painted on them that told a brief history of the structure. A further "sustainable development" commitment made by the developers is to include part of the old building's structure in the new construction.

The interesting part now follows. The building was covered in scaffolding in 2022, ready for demolition and reconstruction as part of the developer's "sustainable development" project. However, after it was partially destroyed, people soon realized that the only part of the structure still standing was the three pillars that supported the arcade. It seems disappointing that the developer only intends to keep the building's pillars in order to preserve it.

By 2023, all of the remaining pillars had finally been taken down. Unsurprisingly, Hong Kong's greedy property developers once again failed to preserve precious historic remnants, causing them to disappear without leaving any traces.

This is just one example of many stories of how Hong Kong's priceless history was destroyed. Because of urban redevelopment and the lack of heritage conservation by the government and developers. Prewar buildings are now very rare in Hong Kong.
