Battle of Rschew

The battles for Rzhev (Russian Ржевская битва Rschewskaja bitwa; also known as Ржевская мясорубка Rzhevskaya mjassorubka "meat grinder of Rzhev"), which took place between January 1942 and March 1943, were among the bloodiest battles of the German-Soviet war. After the troops of the Wehrmacht, represented by the 9th Army of Army Group Center, were repulsed in front of Moscow at the end of 1941, the Red Army tried in a series of operations to break through the German defenses north and east of Rzhev and to break through the divisions of the 9th Army. Cut off and destroy army in this projecting front arch. In 15 months with three major offensives, the Red Army was unable to defeat or destroy the German troops. Finally, the Germans withdrew to backward catching positions with the company Buffalo Movement.
