Introduction

Velvet Assassin is not, in its default state, for everyone. Legions of players give up on the game because of just a few of its features-- namely, its slow pace and unforgiving mechanics. But not you! YOU are a devout member of the PC Master Race, and can bend games (well, a lot of them) to your will by screwing with the config files! No, it's not fig-tional, it's the truth!

Find Files (the boring part)

First, find the aio folder in the Velvet Assassin game folder. By default (as in, it's not my fault if it's somewhere else for you) this is found in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Velvet Assassin\aio
Copy the aio folder and paste it somewhere safe convenient outside of the Steam folder, such as the Desktop. This is our backup, so we have something to revert back to if we screw up the configs. You can't fall back on nothing!
In aio (the one in the Velvet Assassin folder), open difficulty.cfg and global.aio in notepad or notepad++.

Here's what the inside of the aio folder should resemble:

Too bad.

To make a change, simply find a variable (line with adjustable number) in the .cfg or .aio file. Example:

Type a new number in the current value's place (do not mess with spaces, names, etc) and then save the file and start the game to test your changes.
Example:

Recommended changes:

Increase Sneak Speed
Helps you progress a bit faster, and makes stealth easier.
In difficulty.cfg, find the line titled SneakSpeed under your current difficulty level (Easy or Agent). Change the 1 to a number between 1.5 and 1.8 for convenience.
INCREASE DISGUISE EFFECTIVENESS! (DO THIS!)
Makes SS Uniform disguise actually *gasp* useful! Decrease the distance at which enemies notice you, allowing for some social stealth gameplay.
In global.aio, find camoflauge_min_distance. Change 500 to a lower number, at most 200.
Increase Close Kill Range
Make takedowns on walking targets easier.
In global.aio, find max_closekill_distance (line 77, 1/3 way down page), change to 200.
[agent] Patrol Speed back to 1
Keep the normal AI walking speed for Agent difficulty, and fix their stuttering motions.
Under [agent] in difficulty.cfg, change PatrolSpeed from 1.1 to 1
Increase Knife Damage (insta-kill)
Enables you to kill an alerted enemy with one knife attack (wait around a corner to avoid damage to yourself).
Open weapons.cfg, find [KNIFE] at the very bottom and change WeaponBaseDamage to 100.

Experiment! Just remember to save (Ctrl+s) within notepad before starting the game!

Ninja Fun Time Mode

So you beat the game. And yes, I know you cheated to beat that last mission. Good job decreasing NPCDamge and increasing PlayerDamage! But you want more. Fear not! Use your newfound Notepad superpowers to bestow great replayability upon Velvet Assassin, with Ninja Fun Time Mode!

Ninja Fun Time Mode
In difficulty.cfg, find SneakSpeed under [agent]. Change it to 5.

Save the file and start up Velvet Assassin, and start a new game on Agent difficulty.

Those Nazis don't stand a chance...

Also combat is hilarously easy if you stick to corners and crouch. It is like Kane and lynch 2 exactly, especially since Mona Mur both does compose the music and ambience of this game perfectly.

Best game for adjusting easily. Ninja mode 6x speed is really fun, better than the original game. ANd also adjusting the missions so every mission is a submision, meaning your gear carries through each level. Even your disguise will be kept in inventory but you must find a closet or toilet to change as the game always resets back to your original outfit at the start of each level.
I really hate this and it is stupid. It reminded me of Hitman 2 silent assassin where each levels starts you with the suit despite the mission being an actual sub mission(like the japan levels)
i like consistency, and i like keeping my status and gear through next missions

@Charlie, in file "Velvet Assassin\aio\player_exdata" are two lines EnemyCloseKill* : Color is set from 0,0,0 to 255,255,255 RGB and Opacity is Alpha - try this

Thank you very much for this guide. I recommend increasing crouch speed for a better experience.

I finished the game for the first time and man I'm grateful for this guide. Without it, the game would be unbearable. It's so awesome that I can mod the game without downloading anything extra. I tried out that Ninja Fun Time Mode and it's creepy. Violette is running around like a mad spider or an evil spirit like Alma Wade.

Sick guide! Wish I knew about it before trying to fathom the headache of using Cheat Engine for this game. Very enjoyable game like this

I finished the game without changing anything!

So much PTSD... So many deaths. But I did all that just to say I didn't cheat.
