Nexus: Battlestar galactica

This is a small guide I created after I saw some people asking how to get this mod.

Let me state upfront, I have nothing to with the creation of this mod, I have just been a fan of since it was released back in 2012.

I recently reinstalled NJI and started playing this mod again, even though it was never finished, in my opinion this mod created by Joshua Stubbles (,and probably a bunch more people that I don't know about) still gets very close to the look and feel of BSG, and is thoroughly enjoyable as is.

That being as it may, it will need some help to get going some 8 years after it was last updated.
How to get it?
Luckily for us, even though it hasn't been updated in 8 years, the creators website is still working.

From here we need two things (1) the mod itself & (2) Nexus skirmisher



So first click on the beta 4.1 download and save the "nbsgbeta41.7z" somewhere on your pc.

Second click the link for nexus skirmisher.



From here download Nexus Skirmisher v0.61 (or later) and any patches

Install instructions are just below the download (see picture) but basically just install the mod or extract the zip in games directory.
(as for the patch just copy the new "Nexus Skirmisher.exe" into the games base directory.)


now open the "nbsgbeta41.7z" you downloaded and copy the "Battlestar Galactica beta 4.1" folder into the games mod folder. (default C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Nexus The Jupiter Incident\mods)
How to get it working?
Back in the good old days, you would be done now, but alas the game has updated and it kinda broke the mod.

If you'd try to start the mod from the games launcher now it will probably give you an error right after starting.

Fortunately its an easy fix.

What we need to do is take "rendering.ini" from

"C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Nexus The Jupiter Incident\universe\engine" *

And copy & overwrite it to

"C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Nexus The Jupiter Incident\mods\Battlestar Galatica beta 4.1\universe\engine" *

*Assuming default steam installation, if you installed steam on a different drive, or not in the root folder, change the path accordingly.

This will replace the outdated ini file from the mod with the games default one.

Now the mod should work, you can launch it from the games launcher by going to the modifications tab and clicking "standalone: Nexus: Battlestar Galactica"
How to get more fracking cylons? (Nexus Skirmisher)
While the mod comes with a bunch of scenarios from the get go, using Nexus Skirmisher you can create some custom battles tailored to your every want and need.

here is how(-ish) to use it.



after starting nexus skirmisher you'll be greated by the above menu, let's go trough some of the options.
  1. Perhaps the most important option, make sure to select the BSG mod, otherwise this is going nowhere.
  2. Here you can give your skirmish a name, this is how it will show up in the games mission select screen.
  3. You may be suprised to find out this option lets you change the map, or maybe you wont be suprised.*
    • There is also a mission type option, don't remember what it does, I think maybe something with the game's camera, just leave it at default.
  4. Again 3 guesses what this does. (hint:bgm)
  5. The bread and butter of the nexus skirmisher.
    • I don't believe the race setting has much impact but make sure the player ships are set to race_player otherwise you can't control the ships (I think, don't quite remember).
    • You can select varius ships under the shiptype option, styp_col are colonial ships, and styp_cyl are cylon ships.
      • styp_col_battlestar1 is not "finished" in this version of the mod, so I suggest you don't pick that ship, unless you want the break the immersion.
    • You can also give your ship names, though be advised that the names will only change in the games UI, the actual models will still have their original names.
    • * You can also find a tab here called "Alternative Location" here, I think this allows you to further customize the map, and starting locations etc. of the battle though I haven't tried this yet.
      *update, this seems to be broken or at least never finished.

When you are finished click the "create mission" button in the bottom and the nexus skirmisher will add your custom mission to the game.
(keep in mind you will only see the mission in the mod/base game you selected in option (1).)

One last word of caution, Nexus is kind of an old game, so if you add to many ships, the game will probably crash.

(This guide was made for the base game though, so perhaps not everthing works the same on the BSG mod.)
Additional information
I am aware there is a workshop version of this mod, but it was not uploaded by the original creators and gives no credit to them, nor instructions on how to install it (It didn't work for me), that's why I used this version in my guide.

This guide uses version 4.1 of the nexus BSG mod, version 4.5 was in development which added more ships, and added more BSG mechanics like FTL jumps, but before this version was ever finished the mod was cancelled by threats from NBCU using the excuse of copyright infringement, even though clearly no one was making money on a free mod for an old game, and this mod should fall under the Fair Use Act (or things similar).

So if anyone reading this works for NBCU please tell your bosses to go frack a toaster, thank you :) .

Oh boy, It's been quite a while, CTD at the start of the fight usually mean the game runs out of memory, have you tried making a smaller battle?

Are you subscribed to "Dynamic Light Source" mod? Try unsubscribing. I've seen this error message when trying to run a mod while being subscribed to "Dynamic Light Source". Nexus seems to screw up the mod loading.

The version on the workshop will crash after running a match for too long. No clue as to why. This is more stable than that right?
