Staightforward! Just drop some cloth in front of the altar, and the chest will unlock!

(the cloth will be lost tho...)
Birthday cake!


Hurray it's some touhou's birthday!
But whose?



Untranslated text tells you whose birthday it is!



Unless you can read the runes it's anyone's guess!
But it's a different touhou each time, so there is no one correct answer!

Just remember, Yukari is 17!
Scales!



Scales tells you how many item slots you need to have filled in your bag. As soon as you have the demanded amount or more, step on the pressure plate and chest will unlock!
Memory!


The altar will flash several pictures of regular mobs one after the other. Then lotsa random mobs will spawn around you!

You're supposed to kill only and only the ones shown on the pictures, in exact order you were shown them. Try not to panic!
Potion!


Drop a potion in front of the altar...Doesn't have to be the fat one....

And then...Amazing chest ahead!
(The potion is lost tho)
It's Xanax time!


Enemies will start appearing in waves. Kill them all and chest is yours!

But here's the catch-you're going to be "confused" so your shots and movements will not go where you intend them to!

You can take your chances, or.....



....you can take some sedatives!

It works irl too!

Very possible, as this review is now outdated, it was written in early stages of the game. I'll have to check things again at some point

Not sure about this but it isn't slots, but rather each individual item. Also, it seems like you must have greater than or equal amount of items to activate.

I cannot get the Scales chest to unlock. It says 23. I have dropped items so that 23 slots are filled. It still does not work. I also tried to make sure it is 23 unique items (no slots with same item type) as well as try to make sure it is a single item (instead of 2 or 3). Still no luck. Maybe its a bug?
