Thief (1/2/Gold) Ghosting Rules
由 aversiac 制作
If you're into the stealth genre, you've no doubt heard of "ghosting"

Especially if you consider yourself a fan of the Thief series. In fact, if the former is true, you've likely already perused the ghosting rules on TTLG. [www.ttlg.com]

This set of rules hopes to bring these ideas over to the Steam community, and perhaps add some accessibility to them.

Intro
Ghosting is a style of gameplay seen throughout all stealth games. The origin of this term, of course, lies within the Thief community.

The basic principles of ghosting imply that you are not seen or heard, and you do no damage.

The only evidence of your presence should be the items you have stolen. (This becomes more important with advanced level ghosting.)
Ghost Mode
AKA Level One Ghost

Ghosting was first conceived by Clayman and Sneak in the Eidos Thief Forum in the year 2000. Clayman wrote the first brief rules that year. Much discussion ensued on clarification, exceptions, and examples between Clayman, Sneak, Peter Smith, Vanguard, and Dafydd. The TTLG Official Ghost Rules [www.ttlg.com] were first compiled by Peter Smith in 2003. Minor clarifications have been written by Klatremus in collaboration with Peter Smith (smithpd here), and a few other members of the TTLG community. This "translation" was created by Brandon A. Alexander in 2020.

  • Highest difficulty level available, usually Expert, although it might be renamed by the author.
  • No combat damage may be dealt or taken and no knockouts or kills of any kind are allowed except where required by mission objectives.
  • Damage taken from falls, machinery, lava, etc. is allowed as a last resort, but such damage is frowned upon and must be reported.
  • No second level alerts. This includes humans, undead, fire elementals, spiders, bots etc. Rats are excluded.
  • The player must not cause suicides of AI or melees that intentionally cause AI to attack each other.
  • No property damage is allowed. No banners cut, no doors bashed in, no things burnt or destroyed, and no broken glass.
  • The use of potions, such as speed, breath, and invisibility, is allowed but frowned upon. Such use must be reported, and a ghost success so aided must be listed as "chemical success".
  • The use of Dark engine techniques such as "banner transmigration" and "nudging," are allowed, but must be reported.
Speed Ghost
AKA SpeedGhost

A Nice Balance, But Slept On

SpeedGhosting refers to a method of play similar to Level One Ghost, but introduces the challenge of trying to minimize the elapsed time as much as possible. This method of play was largely improvised by Brandon A. Alexander.

  • All rules of basic ghost apply. Level one alerts are allowed, but level two alerts are forbidden (this includes all AI).
  • Use of the store/loadout section is prohibited.
  • Any time under an hour is a success.
  • Any time under 45 minutes, but over 30 is listed as a Silver Run/Success.
  • Any time under 30 minutes, but over 15 is listed as a Gold Run/Success.
  • Any time under 15 minutes is listed as a Platinum Run/Success.
  • Saves do not count towards run-time.
  • It's helpful to include a recording of the gameplay for the run.
Advanced Ghost Mode
AKA Level Two Ghost

This style is somewhat a mending of Supreme Ghost Mode and Ghost Mode. This mode is directed toward players who want a slightly more challenging Ghost experience.

  • All previous Ghost Mode rules apply here.
  • No First Alerts of any kind from any AI or Device.
  • Use of the loadout store is prohibited.
  • Put everything back that can be put back. Doors should be closed and re-locked if they are re-lockable, chests and gates closed if closable, keys returned, books/scrolls/letters returned to their original place. If items are picked off a patrolling AI, drop them back on the original patrol route or at their feet if they are a stationary AI. If the item was acquired from a niche or other similar place you can’t get it back into, drop the item on the floor below it or the nearest logical place.
  • No turning off of watchers, or other security systems.
  • No exploitation of the Dark or NewDark engine.
  • No knockouts or killings of any kind are allowed.
  • Objectives that require you to explicitly break rules are allowed to be completed so long as you remain unseen.
Supreme Ghost Mode
AKA Level Three Ghost

If you enjoy pain/brutal-difficulty, this one is for you!

  • Highest difficulty level available and playable, usually Expert, although it might be renamed by author.
  • Complete the mission without leaving any incomplete (unchecked) objectives, including optional objectives. Objectives declared irrelevant (a red circle) do not matter. Also, it is acceptable to bypass objectives by not triggering them as long as the mission completes.
  • No Damage given or taken: No falls or incidental damage from lava, loss of health from being underwater too long, etc.
  • No Alerts of any kind from any AI or Device: No first alerts, no comments at all from AI. A single chirp from a Watcher, “Musta Been Rats…”, zombies groaning, etc are a bust. All AI and devices must remain in their normal state and not react to anything you do or initiate in the game. AI walking around and muttering to themselves or having a conversation with another AI are fine.
  • Inventory and Weapons: You can not purchase weapons and inventory items from the store at loadout. This thief doesn’t even go to the store to chance being seen and identified purchasing said items. Use nothing that would leave a trace or remnant of evidence. No Potions can be used at all. Rope Arrows and Scouting Orbs can be used but they must be retrieved. Holy water vials are not considered potions and are allowed.
  • No dousing of torches. Turning off electric lights, snuffing candles, or removing any light source including Mushrooms is also Not Allowed. Removing light sources directly created by the player, for example in order to complete a puzzle, is allowed.
  • No use of moss arrows to deaden noise.
  • The use of moss, water, and other arrows is allowed for other purposes, such as to hit a switch or to complete a puzzle element.
  • Put everything back that can be put back: doors closed and re-locked if they are re-lockable, chests and gates closed if closable; keys returned, books/scrolls/letters returned to their original place.
  • No triggering of traps is allowed if the trigger is caused directly by the player, such as stepping on a pressure plate or crossing an invisible trip wire. If a trap is already running when the player arrives (e.g., the fireballs in Bonehoard), it is not a bust.
  • No property damage of any kind: No door bashing, banner slashing, crate/barrel breaking, blowing up mechs or watchers. Lock picking that creates infinitesimal degradation of the lock mechanism is OK.
  • No exploitation of the Dark or NewDark engine.
  • No knockouts or killings of any kind allowed: whether by blackjack, gas arrows, hammers, maces, or any weapons or items at all, whether they show up in the stats or not. No induced melees.
  • As with normal Ghost, Explicit Objectives to break a rule (such as to kill someone) prevail over the rules, but it is not permitted to break a secondary rule that seems necessary to meet an objective.
  • Keep a clean inventory. Return all that is not needed and possible to return.
Terms
"Bust" - Breaking a ghost run.

"Level 1 Alert" - Level one alert is essentially the warning stage of alertness. A guard may comment in a way that would have you believe he is suspicious, usually with the cue "What'd I see there?" etc. He/she will not deviate from their patrol at this stage.

"Level 2 Alert" - When an AI switches to actively searching for a threat.

"Level 3 Alert" - This means the AI is chasing the player or a threat.

Something like this is the only real reason I'd like a re-release with 'achievements', just to have a 'ghost' achievement based on how the game reacts and not have to wonder if you missed something or 'cheated'. A bit like how Half Life 2 has a one bullet achievement for playing through without shooting which mixes things up from how you'd normally play. Probably too difficult to implement in even a Nightdive remaster, but maybe if ever there's a mostly faithful remake, they'll think of such things. Doesn't even have to be an achievement, just a 'hardcore ghost' mode where you fail instantly if you're detected or do any non-ghost rule stuff.

Weird that on SGM, Clayman and Sneak permitted the use of arrows to shoot (optionally shootable) switches. Wouldn't the arrow make a really loud noise, or leave the cut of a broadhead, or the puddly mess of water?

Not that I'm patient enough for just Ghost Mode, but that was an odd call for those guys to make.

@dbramblet theres a guy who has done a ton of levels using SGM. i added the link to his YT channel in the section for Supreme Ghosting
dbramblet 2022 年 11 月 28 日 下午 2:18
Is SGM only theoretically possible or has it actually been done?

All ghosts bring honor to their games. Thank you, Fujii, for porting this information to Steam.:TheRaven:

I think ghosting is kind of similar to speedrunning in a way that you've already passed a game and know everything already, and now you're just trying to master it and finish it perfectly. I don't think it's possible for a human to not make mistakes on first playthrough. It's up to the person to find it boring or entertaining.

Only just picked up the game and haven't played it since it was new, but I know what I'll be doing as soon as I complete my first playthrough now :D nice guide!
