Go livestock instead of farms first because you get clothing materials and what not, which only requires a single tailor, then people will be even more efficient, returning for warmth less often.
You can buy 1 at a time until you have 2 and they'll reproduce fine, 4-6 is insanely expensive starting out. Farms are also bad if you're on Harsh weather, you have to micro and know what crops are quick.
That said, I disagree entirely with your 'cluster' build, too many basics are faulty
this is a problem in real life too :p
