A bit more than just a payday loans shop, the origin story of this business is actually kind of interesting. Scottish guy moves to the U.S. - Florida, specifically, in the late 80s. He buys a bakery biz and notices that people are trying to cash cheques outside of banks ... because banks. I don't know if its still done - I haven't cashed a cheque at a convenience store since probably 1994. But ... he says, at the time, "Why can't we just do that?" And it worked. And yes, the name is an amalgamation of America and Scotland - at least that's what Wikipedia tells me. It's IRL, you can have a gander here[google.com].
