Description
SEMI-DEPRECATED
Since All Under Heaven addresses the principal pet peeve (European-looking CoAs everywhere) that inspired this mod, I no longer have a strong reason to continue maintaining it, and it likely that I will sunset it for good at some point.
For now, I have only decided to strip it down to its most necessary functions (related to CoA appearance) in order to make it easier to keep updated.
If you are looking for the cadet-creation-related Game Rules that were removed, I recommend checking out mods that specialise in those aspects (ie. More Game Rules by Neutrino).

Old Description:

QUARTERING BE GONE!
Are you bothered by the cruel and unusual violence that the game inflicts upon your dynasty's Coat of Arms when someone forms a cadet branch?
Do you squint really hard when you see a massive inconsistency between pre-made houses and gameplay-generated ones?
Does the application of Euro-centric heraldic conventions across the entire world keep you up at night?

If the answer to any of the above is "yes"... then you put a lot more reasoning into it than I did!

I just wanted my CoA to be pretty! ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌

FEATURES
  • A set of Game Rules that allow you to decide how Cadet Branches generate their Coats of Arms. They can be inherited from the House Head's capital barony, they can keep the Dynastic crest, or they can generate a random design appropriate for the House Head's culture and religion
  • As of All Under Heaven, different cultures handle their CoAs differently. To avoid messing with the new templates, the funcionality of this mod is limited to cultures that have no special CoA templates (so generally the western parts of the map)

COMPATIBILITY
  • This mod modifies the following vanilla Scripted Effects: found_cadet_house_decision_effect
  • As of the 2025/11/14 update, the mod no longer modifies the Create Cadet Branch decision. As such, it should be compabile with most game rules mods.
  • Compatible with achievements

REQUIREMENTS
  • Crusader Kings 3, version 1.18.1.1+

@Dragoon @Scoia: Mhm... I guess they must have their own rules now, so the "generic fallback" doesn't apply to them, and that's the only case that Happy Heraldry covers anymore.

Since the mod is semi-deprecated now, I won't be addressing exceptions or maintaining it beyond making sure it doesn't crash the game. However, if anybody wants to adopt and expand/improve/update it going forward, please feel free to do so, no need to ask for permission or anything <3

It appears that as of the 1.18.1 update, setting the CoA rule to Capital doesn’t remove the quartering for certain cultures that should be considered “western” specifically it appears to not work for Norman, French, Occitan and sometimes the Castilian/leonese culture. It’s weird because certain cultures like the Hungarians, Russians, Croats, scots and central German heritages have the rule applied just fine.

Okay, it's updated! Although you might notice the mod is a little lighter. I have removed all the scripting related to the Create Cadet Branch decision, which means that this mod no longer governs the cost and restrictions of creating new Houses. If you miss those rules, I recommend installing a Game Rules mod that most likely does it better.

On the upside, the mod should now be significantly more compatible with said Game Rules mods, and also future game updates.

I have not had any crashes yet, so if you were affected by those, please let me know if the update fixed them for you. And if not, please provide more information (such as where you're playing, which method your Happy Heraldry game rule is set to, etc.)

Yes, we're aware of the crash. Please don't use the mod until it's updated. No ETA on the update, but I'm hoping to at least take a good look at it today if/when I'm free.

Ooops! I got a little distracted and completely forgot this wasn't updated yet >.< I'll get on it ASAP. I guess it's a good timing since the game just updated today
