Introduction
Welcome to the (hopefully) newbie-friendly "HWM Face Posing" (or "Fixing Glitched Faces") guide!

You won't need to download any addons from the workshop for this to work.

A lot of people avoid using HWM ragdolls because you usually end up with a distorted face after right-clicking them with the Face Poser.
This guide will show you a simple way of setting the HWM model's faces to default so you can pose them easily.

Skip to "The Default Face" if you already know...
  • ... what a HWM model is
  • ... how to spawn a HWM model
  • ... how to access and use the face poser tool
Please note that this guide does not show how to create certain expressions. It is just here to help you get a blank, normal-looking face to work with.
HWM Models
Skip this section if you already know what an HWM model is and how to spawn one.

HWM ("hardware morph") models don't look any different from the default models on first glance. They are unique though: Their face posing is advanced and they have a lot more sliders to work with, which enables a much higher customization. Not only can you create more realistic expressions but also highly distorted faces (as often seen in videos) with those models. Another unique trait of the HWM models is that their faces can be posed asymmetrically.
The HWM models initially appeared in the "Meet the" videos by Valve.

Now, how to spawn one? It's simple.
First press and hold "Q", as you always do when you want to spawn something.
Navigate to:
Your Spawnlists
> Team Fortress 2
>> Characters

You will see the TF2 characters coming up:

On this picture, the HWM models are framed with red. Click one to spawn it.

Please keep in mind that you cannot face pose the Pyro.
The Face Poser Tool
Skip this section if you already know how to access the Face Poser.

The Face Poser is going to be important when we, well, pose faces.
Look a bit to your right and you'll see some text. Those are tools.
Search for the tab "Posing", then find the Face Poser and click on it.
An empty window should open. This window will be where you pose the face of the character you are going to select.

  • Red: Face Poser
  • Blue: This should open up after you've clicked on the Face Poser tool.

That wasn't hard now, was it?
With the Face Poser selected, leave the spawn menu and right-click on your spawned HWM model.
If it suddenly looks a bit odd you did everything right. Move on!
The Default Face
If you just skipped here, please spawn a HWM ragdoll and right-click it with the Face Poser tool

What you see now should look similiar to this, depending on the ragdoll you chose.

Don't worry, this guide is here to fix that!

The following steps are relatively simple, easy to memorize and apply to every ragdoll that gets a distorted face when selected with the Face Poser.
This includes models from Half-Life 2 (Alyx, G-Man and the Vortigaunt) and Left 4 Dead 2 as well as some of the models you can download from the Workshop.

1. [Optional!] Right below the pictures of the faces you will see the Flex Scale. Move the slider to the far right, the face will look even more distorted now. That's OK, it's just what we want. If you forgot something it will get very noticeable thanks to this step.

2. You will see a pretty long list of sliders below. You may have noticed that some of them are centered while others are not.
Now the part you most likely came here for: You have to put all centered sliders to "0.5", except "right CloseLid" and "left CloseLid".

  • Green (optional): Move the slider of the Flex Scale to the far right. Move this slider back to 1 after you're done and checked the face!
  • Red: Put every centered slider to 0.5
  • Blue: Leave "right CloseLid" and "left CloseLid" at 0
Hint: You can double-click the numbers to the right of the sliders and enter values by yourself. This may save you some time! Just copy "0.5" (Ctrl-C) and paste it (Ctrl-V) where needed.

Results:

Your character looks like this? Sucess! Now you can play around with the sliders and create advanced facial expressions!

Step 2 applies to every ragdoll that gets a distorted face when selected with the Face Poser.
This includes models from Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 as well as some of the models you can download from the Workshop.

Red: The Half-Life 2 models this technique applies to.
Thanks to Federal Boob Inspector for bringing it up!
Possible Mistakes + The End
Please check before commenting and asking for help:
1. Are you using an HWM model?
2. Did you move ALL the centered sliders to 0,50?

I hope this guide was helpful and understandable for everyone. Thanks for reading! Got a question? Found a typo? Horrible grammar? Just want to say thanks? Leave a comment!
