No.1 install game to PC
No.2 after go to where you have installed the game and go into properties-Compatibility and set Compatibility mode to windows XP (service pack 3) or windows 7 if you want to use steam overlay

Recommended for widescreen displays
No.3 make a shortcut and to into the shortcut's properties
type this in target

Original version: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Codemasters\Colin McRae Rally 2005\cmr5.exe" "WIDESCREENDISPLAY"
if you have gog version just add "WIDESCREENDISPLAY" in the end of the target add a space after cmr5.exe"

This will add
widescreen 16:10 and 16:9 ratio aspect like the Xbox version fov adjust and widescreen hud
if you have 4:3 screen leave this out

Problems that are still present
Cannot pause with controller even in CMR 3 or 04 only if you have it on windows XP (service pack 3) Look up on the PC Wiki for the fix.
V-Sync has to be on at all times if off your game will stutter and will be unplayable
