Overview
Folklore hunter is about exploration and getting to know your enemy. The more you know about the Wendigo the less scary he becomes, trust me on this one! You start in your cabin, the only place where you are safe from Wendigo. You got your rifle, some ammo, 2 batteries and 1 bandage. There is some equipment around the cabin (meat, cameras and traps) so equip yourself with everything you need.
Let's go over the items:

-Traps can be placed on ground, they trigger when something steps on them. They main purpose is to hold the Wendigo in place for some time so you can scare him off with your gun. Traps cannot be picked up again, so be careful where you place them and how much you place. You cannot get them from crates, you only get scrap metal. Use 3 scrap metals to create 1 trap.

-Meat supposedly lures the Wendigo towards it, but my research says otherwise. He never came to eat it, even when it was on the ground with no traps. Like traps you can't get them from crates. Only way to get meat is to shoot the wild deer running around the forest. You get 2 meats per 1 deer.

-Cameras can be placed everywhere on the map and can be acceses by pressing TAB. You can turn them around when viewing them and you zoom. They also have motion detectors in them so they will alert you when they see something. They also glow in the dark when placed and are showed on the map. You can use that to create markers at points of interest and the glow to set up some light when you need it. The motion detection thing is pretty useful, as it can pick of movements even behind walls, so be sure the make the best out of them.
Wolves
Wolves are your daytime threat. They growl when you get near them. If you get too close they will howl, signaling their attack. If they didn't howled they won't attack. Wolves travel around the map in groups of 2 or 3 and take 1 bullet to be killed. They cannot be harvested for meat (might be changed in the fututre). Overall wolves are more annoying than threatening if you have atleast some aiming skill. Be carefull when shooting at them near cave entrances, Wendigo might hear the gunshots and come out after the sounds even in daylight.
Wendigo

The main star of the show. Wendigo is fast and hard hitting foe. He isn't programmed to know exactly where you are.

He remembers where he saw you last and after nightfall heads there to look for you. He has some kind of totems around the map (those weird deer skull on a stick) which track your position when you come near them, so rotate them away for future trips around them. If the totem managed to get glimse of you, Wendigo will go to the last totems that saw you instead.
Wendigo leaves his cave around 7:30-8:20 PM and comes back at 6:30-7:20 AM (times may not be 100% accurate). If he doesn't see you, he will listen for your sounds and will also use his smell to locate you.

He has good night vision but can't see through foliage. At night when you are in the open, don't run and definetly don't shoot. Gunshots pretty much give him your exact location. In multiplayer, when Wendigo is chasing another player, you can shoot to make it go after you instead. 2 hits from him will kill you and you can't outrun him.

He wanders the forest at night and stalks his cave's tunnels at day, but will leave them if provoked.
You can hear him talking and imitating little girl's voice. You can also hear sticks cracking and some ambient sounds may play. They might sound really close to you but they are not, he is actually pretty far away, but he is beggining to catch your tracks, so if you stay in one place he will inevitably find you. Stay as quiet as possible and try to distance yourself as fas as possible. I like to call this the calm/tracking phase. When he sees you or hears you the attack/agressive phase starts. Once this phase starts he will start running towards you and starts growling heavily, your character will also breathe heavily. At this point just run, place traps to stop him for a while and shoot him. 3 shoots will make him run away, but only for a while, he will resume to chase you or if you managed to run far enough, start tracking you again.

The Wendigo may wander around the day too. The only case I seen this though is when you lure him out of the cave and scare him away with bullets. if you scare him long distance from the cave he will start running around the forest during daylight. He will be stuck in his "scared" mode and will run away from you, once night starts things return to normal and he will start hunting you like he would normaly do when night starts
Safe spots
If you played the game for a while, you probably know the house dissapers during the second night. So how will you hide from the Wendigo now? The answers is: SAFE STICKS. Safe sticks are all around the map. They are those weird crooked tree branches which you can climb on. Just jump on them and wait for the night to end, you can't jump on some of them so keep that in mind. For those who are too scared to just wait in a complete darkness, just place a bunch of cameras around the safe stick, they will give you some light. Wendigo will keep running around you but on a safe stick he can't get you, so you are completely safe.
NOTE: This probably isn't intended feature, it's more of an bug, which causes the Wendigo's AI to become confussed and run around in a desperate way to find a way to get to the same hight as you.
Making your own safe spot
If safety sticks get removed this might come in handy. The harsh wilderness of Folklore hunter ain't made for fearful but having a safe spot might give you the ever needed feel of safety. So let's get over the things you will need.

1. Cameras, 3 are the minimum you will need.

2. Bear traps, I would suggest 5 of them.

And thats about it. Yeah... I kinda expected this to be slightly bigger section.
Now how do you make it? Quite easily:

1. Pick a place, preferably somewhere where you have an easy access to it and where you can quickly get at nightfall. You might also consider making it with your back against a wall, or a big rock in this case. With the rock behind you, you won't need to worry about whats behind you, also you won't need that much beartraps with this method (You can also fortify the shaman cave with the same effect!)

2. Once you have a place where you will hide for the rest of your playing session, place cameras so they send light in all directions (Once again you will need far less cameras if you are doing this with your back against a rock). This will also serve as pretty clear marker on the map.

3. Place traps all around, and I mean do a complete overkill with the number of traps placed. Be carefull where you place them, cause you can't pick them back up. Place them slightly away from the spot you will be standing, so when the Wendigo steps in them, he won't reach you.
Should look like this:

Trigger your own traps so you can walk in and out without getting hurt and after nightfall, reset them and wait silently until the night ends. Should Wendigo find you, make sure to give him shower of bullets. Make sure he gets shoot several times by the time he steps in the bear trap. You are pretty much asking to be killed when you start shooting at him at the time he is in the bear trap. So you scare him away, reset the trap, reload your gun and resume to waiting till sunrise.

Alternative: Fortified shaman cave:

I like this one better! It's feels a lot like the cabin, and it's way safer. The only problem is that Wendigo has his totems here so he will know that you are there, for the first night anyway. You can rotate them for future, but they will see you the first time you go here. So it's more safe, but you will need way more ammo to fend Wendigo off for the entire night.
All clues locations
Lot of people wonder where to find all of these. The clues are not needed to complete the hunt, but they offer semi-useful information.

1. In the camp near the cabin

2. In the swamp area

3. On the crossroad near the Wendigo's cave

4. On top of an hill near the ritual site, in the pathway circle

5. In the ritual site

6. Where the cabin was after it disappears

7. Near a tree next to a rock, close to one of the bridges

8. In the Wendigo's cave, next to a tree behind the giant rock in the main hall of the cave. The pond is next to the giant rock

And this is it, all the poor souls who met their end in the forest.
How to kill the Wendigo?
You may have noticed that no matter how much bullets you waste on Wendigo, he still comes back. The reason is that bullets are only meant to scare him away not to kill him. The true way to kill him is to perform banishing ritual in the ruins located down on the map.
You will need:
-12 blank runes, found near the 3 locations with the inscriptions you also need.
-Lighter, you get one for picking up the clue close to the cabin, or you can find the lighter in crates.
-Chisel, found on the body located in the ritual site.
-3 inscription with the symbols you will carve in the blank runes. I will cover how to get them in the next section.

Map location of the ritual site.
Inscriptions
You will need 3 inscription with symbols to begin the banishment. So how do you get them?
You will need 2 blank pages and 2 charcoals. You can get charcoal from the fire before your cabin and blank pages from the journal in the shaman cave near your cabin. Now you will need to find two books containing the symbols and interact with them to get the inscriptions (you need the charcoal and a blank page to be in your inventory to get it), the third inscription is found in the ruins and it's already finished. Below is the location of the shaman cave.

The first book is found in the shaman cave and the other is in the...*sight*...Wendigo's cave.
The one in the Wendigo's cave is on some form of an altar that glows red, so you can't miss it. A lot of people have problem finding it, due to the size of the cave, so check the video below for the right path to take!
Wendigo is present in the caves during the day. Option for the brave ones out there is to snuck into the cave during the night while the Wendigo is prowling the forests.

NOTE: The blank runes you need are found near the books and around the ritual site, so DON'T MISS THEM.
Banishing the Wendigo
This is it. With 12 blank runes, 3 inscriptions, lighter and a chisel, head to the ruins at the bottom of the map, specificaly the giant circle in the midle. Place the runes on the stands and engrave the symbols in to them. After all 12 symbols are engraved, the runes will light up and you will begin to hear chanting. It should look like this:

Now lure the Wendigo inside the big circle. Once he is in place he won't move or attack, he is basically trapped. Now just light it and enjoy your victory as the Wendigo burns to ashes...

Anyone know where to find the artifacts during the hunts outside of the story missions?

Thanks for the guide. To update it you need to find 12 ritual stones total to do the banishing ritual. Look for small flat rocks near the sites when you find the tomes. We found 4 in the small cave with the first tome, another 4 at the ritual site, 3 at the tome inside the big cave network (from the pond go right then left left and left until you run into it), and 2 more right by the pond next to a skeleton behind a big rock. This last one was the hardest to find and we went through the whole cave network again to find it.

Okay, sorry for abandoning the guide for so long, but it was misinformation that the inscripiton in cave was moved. It was a hoax. But I added a picture, I'm planning on adding a full video showcasing the path you need to take. If someone is reading this then it's probably already added.

Okay update, The inscription in the cave has been moved somewhere else in the recent update. When I find where, I'll update the location.

The one in the cave? I'll try my best to add it there.

Third inscription is apparently hard to find for me and my friends, could there be a location image? That would be cool.
