I posted this elsewhere but i thought i'd put it here for anyone stuck that doesn't want to be told what to do but wants/needs a nudge in the right direction, there's a cryptic hint based guide on UHS Hints CLICK HERE.[www.uhs-hints.com] It's such a good hint system, it doesn't outright tell you, it just gives you a little bit extra info at a time to nudge you along the way.

As an example here's a copy/pasted sample of hints for selenitic age in Myst 1:
How do I open the door with the five sliders next to it?
Remember that everything in this age is controlled by sound.
One of the devices here is designed to give you the sound combination.

Ya gotta wonder if it's been given 3 stars coz either
1) i didn't plagiarize the guide
2) people don't read and think the preview i gave is clickable
3) i haven't posted any spoilers


The fact of the matter is I'm not going to tell you how to play the game, i'm not plagiarizing anyone's website ever, and no, i'm not doing the thinking for you.

Yes sometimes you have to stop and figure things out, kind of what the whole Myst series is about.

- Yup this was written in the late 90s lol. Did Myst with minimal cheating but Riven is more challenging (esp since it's exclusively flatscreen) so thanks for pointing this out. Minimal cheat nudges, perfect.

Absolutely agree wholeheartedly, but failing that, this is a way of only dipping your toes without being all in.

I would rather die than use a hint. I failed in 1997 and took a 26 year sabbatical from this game but have just yesterday completed it. But if I had got stuck this time I would have shelved it again.
It is not impossible. The answers are all inside the game. You just have to be willing to try everything in every combination until you understand the rules. Not for everyone I understand.
But if you think it is difficult then try Physicus (1999) in which you must learn basic electronics.
What a headfuck that was!
