My ride through the definitive edition of Mafia II has been mostly smooth and enjoyable despite the circumstances. However, I couldn't help but notice among online guides some images I had yet to witness, only to realize that some form of censorship may be in effect.

This is in no way an extensive list, but a sample for all to see.
Comparison
In each screenshot, the top half represents the "Classic" edition, the bottom "Definitive." All images are from the latest builds on Steam as of 2020/06/15.

Observation
I don't play Mafia II to see some skin so I won't make a fuss over it. However a loss of content is a loss of content so I thought I would just take note.

It's interesting to see inconsistency in the means and degrees of modification. Mosaic censorship in one, total image removal in another, while all Playboy pinups remain intact. The most puzzling is the removal of vehicle images which actually hurts the gameplay... perhaps they too were deemed too "sexy?" It can't be a license issue as cars themselves are in the game all right.

If anything, it is to show the weird and sad state of game industry that gamers have to live with these days.

It could be glitch but it's still there. I've just re-installed and checked.

And I agree, the censorship is totally uncalled for. I mean, it's a game about mafia. Don't even try to play innocent, please? :conwayshrug:

I don't understand why they would censor any of it, especially considering that the Playboy magazines are still in the game with no censorship at all! And that last one, what the heck??? I think it might be glitched.

Thanks! I've since completed all DLC missions, and most briefing screen were actually missing. I don't know if this is a tweak to meet the latest "standard" on consoles or just some mismanaged assets, but it's really uncalled for on PC.

I can confirm the censored artworks (bad valet) and the missing mission screen (Vehicle theft). The time to think mission screen is displayed correctly though...

Hmm... interesting. Maybe there is a package difference? Mine was from an old Humble Bundle IIRC, and has SubID of 8773 which is different from the one on the store now (342913).

You can check the SubID by typing "licenses_for_app 1030830" in Steam client's console.

I started The Betrayal of Jimmy some hours ago and all the pre-missions screens were present and uncensored.
