Beginner's Guide to MahJong Princess Rough English Translation
由 PepsiBunny 制作
To begin this game, you'll be guided through some screens to determine how comfortable you are playing Mahjong. You'll be able to choose to go over the rules, begin a simple match, begin a harder match, and begin a real match. The following translations are if you choose to go over the rules of the game. I already know how to play Mahjong but there are so many variations that I chose to go over the rules just in case Japanese Mahjong had some rules I wasn't aware of. I recommend choosing the 'go over the rules' option even if you know how to play just to be on the safe side.

I roughly translated the 'go over the rule' sequence so you can use this guide to follow along if you don't understand Chinese. This translation is super rough. I did my best but I also don't know Chinese so I used Google Translate liberally and added my own tips and tricks of Mahjong. If you find an error in my translation, please PM me and I can send over the original file on my computer so you can edit and fix it.

Beginner: Start From the Basics of Mah Jong
Lady Boss: The message is clear, let me briefly introduce the general rules of Mah jong.

Lady Boss: Playing Mah Jong is all about how you draw your tiles. There are 14 tiles in a set. Your winning set has one pair, and three remaining sets of three.

Lady Boss: These are examples of two of the three sets of three that can help you win. Three of a kind are called 'Pong' and a run of three consecutive numbers in the same suit is called a 'Chi'.

Lady Boss: So if you want to discard a tile, remember to leave a pair first, then the rest of the three sets will naturally come. It's okay! The tiles shown here are an example of a winning hand.

Lady Boss: So which of these two examples is a winning hand? The answer is the top hand because the bottom hand lacks a pair.

Lady Boss: How about it, do you have a grasp? Do you want to continue?

Yellow Box:
No problem, let's do it!

Purple Box:
I'm confused, can you repeat the rules?

Choose Yellow box

Lady Boss: The let me introduce you to some special features of Japanese Mah Jong,

Lady Boss: Even if you have a "Khan" which is four of a kind, you are not allowed to call it as four of a kind is not apart of a winning hand in Japanese Mah Jong.

Lady Boss: The one who declares Mah jong gets to score fan (points). These fan are based on the contents of the winning hand. Here are examples of the most commonly used "fan": Thirteen Orphans (One of each Dragon and Wind, 1 and 9 of each suit and 14th tile forming a pair with any of these. The hand must be concealed but the winning tile can be taken from a discard), Big Four Winds (Pong of each Wind, and any pair) and Hidden Treasure (Four Pongs, any pair, all concealed, and win by self-draw).

Lady Boss: Of of the best hands to try and get is Thirteen Orphans. To do so, you must have 1 and 9 of each suit, one of each Dragon and Wind, and the 14th tile forming a pair with any of these.

Lady Boss: So please, which tile should be removed from the hand to form Thirteen Orphans winning hand? The answer is A.

Lady Boss: How about it, do you have a grasp? Do you want to continue?

Yellow Box:
No problem, let's do it!

Purple Box:
I'm confused, can you repeat the rules?
Choose Yellow box

Lady Boss: There are also three Cardinal tiles called Dragons. They represent the red, green and white dragon.

Lady Boss: As long as you have three of a kind with any of the dragon tiles, they count as a Pong and can be used in a winning hand.

Lady Boss: So which card can be added to the hand to complete a Pong of green dragon tiles? The answer is B.

Lady Boss: How about it, do you have a grasp? Do you want to continue?

Yellow Box:
No problem, let's do it!

Purple Box:
I'm confused, can you repeat the rules?

Choose Yellow box

The Indicator Board
Lady Boss: Before continuing, let's take a look at what the indicator board in the middle of the table looks like.

Lady Boss: The game begins with the person sitting east of the board.

Lady Boss: Which of these tiles represent East? The answer is B.

Lady Boss: How about it, do you have a grasp? Do you want to continue?

Yellow Box:
No problem, let's do it!

Purple Box:
I'm confused, can you repeat the rules?

Choose Yellow box

Lady Boss: What I've just explained are the most common rules of Japanese Mah jong. If you'd like to learn more or go over them again, they can be found in the "Rules" area of this game.

Lady Boss: Now that you know the rules, you can go to the second step and engage in light combat. You may also go directly into a game and skip the further guides all together.

Lady Boss: Of course the better choice is to go into the second step and engage in light combat but I wish you the best of luck and strength, whichever you choose. From Rijin ~

Yellow Sub-Box:
Yes

Meet the Girls
Lady Boss: You learn quickly! Let's get into the actual game and engage in light combat.

Dora: Are you the new guy? I won't give up the world championship title so quickly!

Angel: World Championship? You've barely played!

Dora: Hey stupid! Don't underestimate my potential!

Moe Moe: Hey, you two don't fight. This is not how we welcome new-comers!

Lady Boss: Right then, let's perform the opening ceremony!

Dora: Haha! Very good very good...I show you what fear really looks like playing a match against me!
Begin Game: First Round
Game Begin

Lady Boss: Let me first briefly discuss the function of the center table.

Lady Boss: East indicates that east goes first

Lady Boss: East is also one of four Cardinal directions represented on this center table.

Lady Boss: There are four rounds.

Lady Boss: The 69 on the table means there are 69 tiles left yet to be drawn.

Lady Boss: The 25000 represent how many points you have right now.

Lady Boss: Everyone's points in the first round are equivalent.

Lady Boss: That means everyone starts with 25000 points.

Lady Boss: To indicate who plays after the first person (East) starts the game is counter clockwise. It begins with East, then South, the West, then North.

Lady Boss: So you're the last player since you are North.

Lady Boss: you can choose to discard any tile you want. you judge for yourself.

Lady Boss points to which tile you discard (you don't actually get to choose)

Lady Boss: It seems your hand is suitable for choosing a 9.

Lady Boss: Your goal for when you discard a tile is to get rid of a tile you do not need in the winning hand you are trying to make. It appeared you did not need that green dragon tile.

Every one takes their turn
It is now your turn. Lady Boss points to which tile you discard (you don't actually get to choose)
You are guided to choose a tile from the discard pile
You are guided to call Chi
You are guided to discard a red dragon tile
You are guided to discard Bamboo 9 tile

Lady Boss: Okay! Let's draw our hand with Broken 9.

Click "Draw"

Lady Boss: Congratulations on your first win! But we need to know how many battle tickets you've won this round.

Lady Boss: Self-drawing means the tiles were drawn from the tile deck, not the discard pile.

Lady Boss: When your opponents take the tiles you've discarded and use it to create a winning hand, it is called "Fu".

Lady Boss: All the hands you used to draw and win will be listed here.

Lady Boss: This time, you only won using this Yaku or specific pattern of tiles. The type of yaku you use in each winning hand will be listed above.

Lady Boss: Becuase you've only done one round, you only win 1000 points.

Lady Boss: It's a good start!

Further Explanation of the Center Indicator Board
Lady Boss: After the first round, the opponents and your scores will be updated on the center table board.

Lady Boss: This is you point to you. You will always be in this position (the North position).

Lady Boss: There are the points you received from winning the first round points to your score.

Lady Boss: It is much higher as opposed to the scores received by your opponents.

Lady Boss: Because your winning tile was taken from the discard pile, the 'owner' of that tile loses half of what that specific tile is worth and the other two opponents pay a quart of what its worth.

Lady Boss: If it is a tile drawn in a high-risk scenario, the owner of that discarded pile must pay the winner the full amount of that card.

Lady Boss: Okay, let's go to round two!

Second Round
Lady Boss: Wow there are so many options on which tile to discard this time!

Lady Boss points to two tile you may discard (you don't actually get to choose)-

Lady Boss: You can choose to discard this white dragon tile.

Lady Boss: You have to white dragon cards to discard from.

Lady Boss: Although you have two white dragon and two red dragon, it is better to discard white dragon because your opponent has two red dragon tile in their discard pile which you can take and call Pong

You discard a white dragon tile

Lady Boss: Good Job! Now you've got your your two red dragons plus the one red dragon taken from your oppoent!

You call Pong with red dragon
You are directed to discard your other white dragon

Lady Boss: If you get discard this tile, you can have a self-wind.

Lady Boss: Self-wind is to put in your hand the same Cardinal direction you are sitting in front of at the table.

Lady Boss: With that, if you can form a a meld, also known as a Pong or Chi, with your corresponding wind tile you may be awarded additional points if you win.

Lady Boss: Ha! Your opponent had a North tile that you are able to take!

You call Pong with the North wind tiles
You discard a Character 6 tile
You discard another character tile

Lady Boss: Dora has dropped the ball and given you control! Take this opportunity!

Do not press the red box in the corner, that cancels the calling of your Pong. Press the glowing diamond in the middle of the screen to finish and win the hand hand

You win with two yaku high (one self-wind pong and one red dragon pong)

Lady Boss: Very good! Your staring hand already has a Pong with the south Wind tile.

You discard a West Wind tile
You discard a North wind tile

Angel: Tsumo!

Angel wins the round by calling Tsumo which means she won the round by drawing the winning tile she need NOT from the discard pile

Lady Boss: It doesn't matter the outcome of the game because it can never be determined in any situation. That's the fun of Mah Jong!

You pay 4000 points to Angel. Moe Moe pays 8000 and Dora pays 4000.

Fourth and Final Round
Lady Boss: In the end, even though this decisive game is almost over, we still have a chance to win!

Lady Boss: You'll notice you only have one card from the Dots suit

Lady Boss: It is wise to discard this tile and not pursue the Dots suit in your hand since you only have this one tile and you are about to discard it.

You discard a Dots 1 tile

Lady Boss: Discard this Bamboo tile as well. Since you also have no Bamboo tiles in your hand other than this one, go ahead and do the same and discard it.

You discard Bamboo 3 tile
You discard Dots 9 tile

Lady Boss: Opportunity is here and all the conditions are right!

You discard south wind tile
You discard Bamboo 9 tile

Lady Boss: All in-one draw! This picture is set!!

You discard East wind tile
You call tsumo and win
