The Gunto were katanas given to Japanese officers as a symbol of power and status.The Type 95 was introduced in 1935,a cheaper model able to be mass produced for the always expanding Japanese army of the mid to late 30's.
These swords were used and carried in the Sino-Japanese war and in WW2,mainly as symbols,but they could also be used for ritual suicide and as a way to lead banzai charges.They were really prized by American soldiers,who usually sold them to each other for inflated prices.
When the war ended,most were surrendered to allied armies.Hiroo Onoda,the last Japanese soldier to surrender (In 1974),turned over his to the president of the Philippines
