If you feel confused, this guide will help you with the right order of playing Borderlands games
Games in order:
  1. Borderlands
  2. Borderlands 2
  3. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
  4. Tales from the Borderlands
  5. Borderlands 3

Note:
* The Pre-Sequel mostly takes place in-between Borderlands and Borderlands 2. Reason why you should play Borderlands 2 first, is because The Pre-Sequel's introduction and ending take place after Borderlands 2. Much of the game is told through flashbacks to before BL2, but it has spoilers for Borderlands 2, especially during the intro and its conclusion. Dialogue also contains spoilers for the events of Borderlands 2.
** You don’t need to play Tales from the Borderlands before Borderlands 3. But it helps. Tales from the Borderlands takes place after BL2, but before BL3. There are events in Tales from the Borderlands that will come up in Borderlands 3.

this is the order for game release but the story really goes like this bl1, bl tps, bl2, tftb, commander lith dlc, then bl3

I think @Mr. Coja had the right idea, but if I may ask: where does New Tales fit in all of this? Or is it a self-contained side story separate from mainline canon?

This guide isnt quite right, the correct order is:

Borderlands
Borderlands 2 (but not the Commander Lilith DLC)
Borderlands: TPS (But not the Holodome DLC)
Tales from the Borderlands
Holodome DLC from TPS
Commander Lillith DLC
Borderlands 3

The Holodome DLC *can* be played during the TPS, but it's events and cutscenes play after Tales, but don't quite spoil too much really, though it would make more sense to play it where it belongs chronologically, especially considering it was released after Tales.

Don't forget to skip BL3 because its plot was written by an orangutan on meth.

It might be good to mention that the "Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary" DLC for Borderlands 2 has a big old loot chest's worth of spoilers for Tales, and you should save that one for after Tales but before BL3.
