2.5y later but anyway: @jack_the_beast the picture is only about the placement. You still need to activate the monoliths. You do that by using them as wildcards in those patterns.

A diamond with a monolith directly opposite to the 2 middle monolith shaped like a hammer also makes a tier 2.

Trapezoid can also make a tier 2 while upgrading the plants in the trapezoid by a tier.
