What are clans?
Clans in Counter-Strike are a group thats made for people to play publicly. You can see through their servers as they have abbreviation on their server (Such as AoD, AoG, XA, etc.), which shows the server is owned by that clan. Usually its public for everyone to play, so you are free to play in it as you like. They have their own set of rules and admins around, so remember to respect the rules and avoid trouble to prevent being punished.
What is their purpose? Their goals?
Simply to be the best, some would make it for different reasons. Whether to be the top dog or just for fun. Some would try to compete with another clan on a 5 on 5 match to see who is the best. Some would just chill in their server and play with people, sometimes have the public go against the clan (depending on the clan server you joined in), it could mean various things when you enter the clan server.
How do I join?
As you join in the server, the clan server have advertisements. You can even ask the admin for the website for their page and they'll provide the link for it. However, its not always a guarantee for you to be in one. You must be active in the clan server and get to know the people in order to actually join one. When you do join one, you must wear their clan tag when entering the server, depending on the rules, you might need it on all the time even outside the server, some clan servers you dont. Whatever rules is in, make sure to follow and not break them.
How do I become Admin?
If you are really interested to become Admin you must follow their rules. I'll give you some tips on what you usually need in order to become Admin.

1. Have a Steam account (Obviously you already got it if you got here through logging in, so CHECK).

2. Get to know the people, become friends and show them how great you are. It doesnt have to be skill, but just be generally a great person. Clans would love to see some friendly faces.

3. Whatever requirements you need to become Admin you must follow, rules varies on different clans. Whether you are up for it or not is entirely up to you.

There are more rules but I'll just leave it as that because again, this varies on the clan you joined in. To put a more clear way to say it, just follow the rules and be friendly. Thats all there is to it.
Why do I have to follow the server rules?
Its important so the game can remain balanced. Refuse to follow can result to a punishment, whether its a kick or a ban. Some clans can kick or ban you just because you have high ping, some rules requires a low ping in order to play their server with or without warning. Some clans can also permanently ban you without warning if you hack in the game.

If you have been falsely banned, you must enter their website, create your account, and make an appeal. The Admin that banned you MUST provide a demo (which are used as recording in the game as proof from what is witnessed) to see if its clean or dirty. If its dirty, means you are a hacker. If its clean, means you are not a hacker. You'll know when the clan members (specifically high ranked Admins) make the call if you are innocent or guilty. If you are guilty, you will remain banned forever. If you are innocent, you will be unbanned and free to play again.

Depending on the clan server you joined in, you need to make sure to check the rules, every clan holds different rules. Similar, but different. Usually it will show at the beginning when you start to join one, make sure to read and follow. If the Admin tells you what you shouldnt do, listen. Admins have the power to not only kick or ban, but slay too. Slaying a player is when Admins use a command to kill the player, this is used if they refuse to listen. Such as refusing to do the objective or AFK (Away From Keyboard). AFK can lead to a kick as well as if you join spectator for too long.

They can also ban you temporary just for reasons too. Such as trolling or being disrespectful. Use inappropriate spray point, and such. If they see who it is, they will take action. So remember also to be nice.
Admin abuse
There WILL be the moment where Admins abuse their power just for fun or trolling. Breaking the rules in the process. The job Admins carry were to monitor the server and make sure it remains clean, its not meant to be used for selfish reason. Abusing Admin power can result in punishment, usually removing Admin powers. If you are a victim of Admin abuse, go to the clan website, create your account, and make a complaint about the Admin abusing.

Sometimes you will a demo to provide evidence. Without it you might lose and the Admin abuser might get away with it, so its important to learn to use it.
Conclusion
Clans existed in Counter Strike community for many years, whether to prove to be the best or just simply to hang out. Some clans can be closed, and some can continue to exist through the years. This continues on with Counter Strike Condition Zero, Counter Strike Source, and later Counter Strike Global Offensive in the Community Server setting. Each clan carries their rules, and each ranked Admins have their roles to fulfill. As a regular player yourself, you must follow the rules. Admins must be responsible for the server, however if someone break the rules and no admins are present, you have to take action yourself whether by using a demo or quitting the clan server.

If you ever do consider joining a clan, I wish you good luck and remember to behave.
