The 1st Dawn Of Man Lets Play
由 Calico-Jack 和其他 4 人合作完成
This is not a guide but rather the repository of all human knowledge from one alternative past.

A list of interested players was compiled, and one player was chosen at random to run a hardcore game of Dawn of Man for 1 ingame year and then document the ups and downs of their year.

Year One
After long wandering we came to a place with plentiful game and fresh water. It was paradise, or at least so we thought at first glance.

Then the realisation sank in that all local animals were huge and ferocious

Mammoths, cave bears, woolly rhinos and giant elk. None of us having the the tools to bring down such huge prey, we could only look on as they glared at us from the distance, daring us to make a move in their direction .

The Elders sat down for a few days to finally pronounce our solution was to make some hefty spears. I think the majority managed to mask our true feelings at being told the blindingly obvious quite well. Though there was a lot of extra special vigour being put into any task that involved hitting something for the rest of the afternoon.

Unable to hunt, we ate fish. And more fish. And more fish. The only steady supply of food we had. Even after it got past the point nobody could stand the sight of fish, we still ate it . Fish hung like a pall over the settlement, generating rancour that seeped into every aspect of settlement life, while making the spears only reminded us more keenly of what was sitting just outside our grasp.

Fish, fish, fish as we selected the stoutest branches, fish, fish, fish as we cut, formed and sharpened them into spears, dreaming of roast meats. Soon fantasy roast meat recipies were all anyone in the settlement would talk about.

The determination to escape from fish based meals spurred us to work increasingly harder, but any other food source would immediately see us abandon everything to chase down anything else: mice, voles, tiny horses ...

Finally everything was ready. The hardiest hunters were chosen and they set off along the river. The first kill, of what they hoped would be many, was a female giant elk. But before they had a chance to butcher the carcass the ancestors decided it was time to really make us pay for whatever transgression they were punishing us for - fierce winds blowing driving snow of the like only seen in the dark of winter sprang up forcing the hunters back to the shelter of the settlement.

And brother Wolf never misses a chance to fill his belly for free.

By the time the storm had blown itself out there was nothing left but the antlers and some hooves.

And fish.

It was around this time, with the rising of the first full moon after the longest night, a child was born. The signs were read, divinations performed and the Elders agreed; no ordinary child was this.
One of the ancestors walks among us.

At least the birth helped us to take our minds off all the bloody fish .....
Year Two
At that time, the village was small and its people were simple, honest and hard working suffering hardship and depravation. They were even fooled by the traders ... once they bought straw, conned into thinking it was food.

There was little food and they were in constant danger of attacks by wild beasts.

One day the elder said they should build a totem. No one thought the idea was good, but you can't argue with the old ones. The totem was strange, ugly some would say, but somehow it brought good luck to the village. They even learned to tame wolves.

Inspired by the great spirit of the totem pole, they began hunting away from the village, and the food became plentiful.

With more food, the children began to be born. First Nohac

then Maralk

Meanwhile, Buds grew up and hunted our first aurochs.

Buds said the straw was going to have some use, but we didn't listen and returned it to the trader.

In early fall, when the sun begins to wane, we celebrate the new year.

It was Buds that noticed it first - the boy Ronald spending all his free time constructing something from bits and pieces. But with each passing day it became clear this was far more than mere childs play, showing discipline and singleness of purpose beyond his years he was mirroring the settlement in perfect miniature, complete with people and dogs from the settlement's pile of sticks. Telling and fortelling the events of the settlement itself.

The elders met and discussed this portent and at length it was agreed that a second ancestor walked among them.

Year Three
After long discussion, it was decided that this year would be dedicated to expanding our tribe by building new tents, and to increase our food stores.

Tracking the ground west of the river, two aurochs were killed and butchered

Following abundant tracks east, the hunt was fruitful, and even managed to kill a wooley rhino and an old mammoth.

To commemorate this great hunt, the elders decided to erect a totem on a small hill overlooking where it had taken place

Balalk's hunting wound got infected, but with the protection of the spirits, it soon passed.

We were also blessed with the birth of Ph

A family of bears got too close to our village, so the elders decided to kill the mother bear, and let nature decide the fate of her young.

Hunting again to the west of the river, a promising hunt turned tragic as the Aurochs herd turned out to be larger than expected, and Troenob was killed.

The entire village agreed that night a skull pole should be erected so that his spirit could continue to guide us, and a totem be erected on the west bank as well, so that accidents would not happen there again. As soon as the meat is collected and dried, we will start building these.

The trader came and taught us how to grind flour, in exchange for many of our tools, including some of our new bows

Thus ends the year in early autumn, with two new tents and a steady store of food.

Thanks for taking the time to comment UglyBird - it was a group effort with each participant writing up their own year running the settlement.
