Modding to Include All Factions
Initially, in order to play Greece, you will need to mod ETW utilizing any one of a number of available mods from the ETW fora. Empire Total Factions works well, it installs easily, and has two modes, early and late. Early begins in 1701, and unlocks a number of minor factions, while Late begins in 1789, and unlocks yet another group of minor factions, including the United States and Greece, whcih are each extremely interesting to play. Also, note that the mod can be toggled on and off so that you may play the vanilla ETW.
Playing As Greece - Turn One
To Play as Greece, you will want to set the Mod to 1789, the Late Game, and select Greece as your faction. Optionally, you may wish to use a trainer or other mod expediter to accelerate movement, research and construction, but in fact Greece begins with excellent trade and economics, despite being small. This guide will walk through using a trainer and unlimited resources. One you select Greece, you will want to give yourself a billion units of currency using Artmoney or CheatEngine. Then save.

Next, you will want to go to the Diplomacy Board. Lavish gifts on all countries, preferably of the $10,000 variety. Second, buy all available technology. Third, you have a list of provinces you are required to conquer in order to win the game. It is much easier to purchase or trade for said provinces diplomatically than to expend troops on them. So start buying the provinces required, and play the SHORT CAMPAIGN. In the Short Campaign, you will need to win the following provinces:

Mesopotamia
Egypt
Tunis
Croatia
Anatolia
Malta
Rumelia
Venetia (Venice)

Of these, you can buy Egypt from the Ottomans, Tunis from the Barbary States, Croatia from the Austrians. Since you have a large amount of money, you can make an offer which cannot be refused, @ $5M for 20 years. The game won't last that long, so it's irrelevant what you promise in the future. Second, with countries like the Ottoman Empire, you will be conquering them in a turn or two, so you will never honor your commitments to them in any event; same with the Barbary Pirates. So promise them the moon.

Mesopotamia in this mod is a protectorate of the Ottoman Empire, so it will need to be conquered. Rumelia is the basic core of the Ottoman Empire, so it will need to be conquered, and Venice needs to be conquered.

Next, exempt all regions from taxations. You don't need money. You need happiness.

Build cannons, lots of them. Egypt will be the main place to do this. If you use a trainer, you will have unlimited movement, and this will be useful. Cannons are needed to break sieges, especially at Baghdad and Constantinople.

Buy provinces from Aghanistan on the Indian Coast with seaport to create Indian trade.

Eliminate all islamic, protestant, catholic relgious buildings. Initially, build colleges but once you have enough universities, build Orthodox relgious schools and seminaries/monasteries and convert your people to the true faith.

Build cannons in Croatia.

Be sure to negotiate military access and alliances with Ottoman Empire and Austria.

Destroy the Madrasa in Egypt and put a university there.

Destroy the Jesuit college in Croatia and put a university there.

Remember to save constantly.

You are still on the first turn.

Buy Lombardy from Spain--more trade ports.

Build cannons in Lombardy.

You will attack Venice with them eventually.

And you will also be able to take Savoy, Genoa & Venice, if you want, and the Papal States as well.

More trade ports.

Buy the Huron Territory and Upper and Lower Louisiana from France. Now you have American trade.

Also buy Corsica from France. Pay them a lot of money and seal an alliance and access with them.

Buy Florida from Spain.

When you buy Tunis from the Barbary States, also buy Algiers. You will be able to build cannon in Tunis, and then conquer the Barbary States.

Build Cannon in New Orleans, Huron, St. Augustine, Corsica.

Be sure to review cities, buildings, ports before you finish any turn.

Tunis is a major city.

You will now have seaparts in Indian, Europe and America.

Now buy Acadia, Montagnia, Upper Canada, NW Territories, Ruperts Land and Newfoundland from the Brits. And make an alliance and access with the Brits. You now have an American Empire waving the Greek Flag.

Opa!

You should now have an alliance of Russia, Austria and Great Britain, with Greece, allied more or less against France, while you have trade with France, which is very good for Greece.

You will be able to trade with everyone while staying the heck out of any wars.

build cannon in the NW territories and Montreal.

Buy Azerbaijan from Persia--it's the backdoor to Anatolia and Armenia. Build cannon there. destroy the madrassa and add a school.

By now, you are #1 in Prestige, and you have not yet fought a battle, to paraphrase Sun Tzu.

Form an alliance with Marantha Confederacy, military access and trade, of course.

Buy iceland from Denmark and ally with them.

At this juncture, end your turn.

Playing as Greece - Turn Two
As Turn Two comes up, the United States and Morocco may declare war on you. Decline the Scots invitation to be their protectors, as they are destined to be conquered by the UK, and you don't want to be alligned against the UK.

Start with Tunis. Build generals, send one or two to each building, and send a couple generals and a cannon to Algiers. Prepare to conquer Morocco and the Barbary States at once.

Conquer Morocco. Two armies of generals with some artillery should do the trick.

Do a round of diplomacy. Give state gifts to all, buy up all technology (hope you were keeping your tech tree working) and do not antagonize allies--instead, reward them.

If you are using a trainer, you have unlimited movement and you don't need forts.

Be sure to rehab units.

The Ottomans are allied and are protectors of the Barbary States.

Consequently, attacking the Barbary States is a sort of crossing of the Rubicon--it commits to to the conquest of the Ottomans.

One notion is to pre-send armies into the Ottoman Empire using military access so they are in position to strike, but really, you can just attack and conquer the barbary states, and then just work your way up the Syrian Coast from Egypt using the heavy cannon from Egypt.

There are three prongs to the Ottoman campgaign--attacking from Egypt thru palestine and Syria, and taking Mesopotamia; attacking from Azerbaijan and taking Armenia and Anatolia; and finally, building cannon and attacking from Athens.

The sweetest thing about playing Greece is, of course, the re-conquest of Constantinople.

When this happens, the Eastern Roman Empire is reborn.

You are now the master of a vast empire that spans three continents and you have recreated the Eastern Roman Empire. It streteches from Constantinople to Morocco and is vaster even than the emipire of Justinian.

Don't fight naval battles--destroying a nation destroys its fleets.

The fleets will disappear once the nation is destroyed.

Now, you can conquer Malta.Knights of St. John by convoy from Tunis' seaport.

This leaves only Venice to conquer on the list. They're allied with Austria, a slight issue.

So conquer Venice, then make peace terms with Austria. Pay them an indemnity. Give them Moldavia if you want. Lord knowns why anyone but Count Dracule would want it.

Remake your alliance, trade agreements and access agreements with Austria.

At this point, you have won the game and just need to sit on your lead until 1825.

Playing As Greece - Optional Issues Turns Three and Beyond
The Game ideally can be won in just two turns.

If you are not using unlmited money or trainers, the game can be won more patiently by developing trade and alliances and access over time. There is a video series on youtube by a very fine game player a brit fellow that explains this in detail. It's easy to find.

Here are the advanced options for the game we just described in the prior sections;

1) You can finish out the tech tree - note, you cannot get a modern university as Greece. You will eventually have to conquer France or some other Western nation to get a Modern University.

2) You can occuppy all of the trade spots by sending all of your many fleets out using one turn construction.

3) You will want to crush the Moghul Empire, and eventuallly, Afghanistran. Not Persia, they are huge trade partners.

4) You will want to conquer Quebec, the Cherokee, the Iroquois, the Pueblo, the Plains and control much of America. Not New Spain as they are trade partners.

5) You may want to conquer Genoa, the Papal States and the Two Sicilies.

6) the Game Engine gets a bit unstable as your empire gets so large.

7) Eventually, in the later stages, you can attain near complete American hegemony by

a) destroying the US
b) destroying the Indians
c) buying all of New Spain from the Spanish
d) conquiering Gran Columbia once you have done all this
e) Mexico is an independent state in this mod, you will need to conquer them also.

It should be noted, it's perversely fun to conquer the US as a foreign nation--not sure why, but doing it as Greece, well, it feels like the 300 Spartans visiting the US.

Feel bad for George Washington, though.

8) In the long run, you will have to obliterate France and conquer Spain. You can trade Flanders away.

9) Sweden may declare war on you, but it will take about five seconds to conquer them. You can trade Norway away. They rebel too much anyway.

10) At this point, you are now Master of the Mediterranean and Ruler of the Americas. Your trade is 50,000 plus per year, and you control all relevant trade sites and ports. Your prestige is in excess of 5000 well balanced between enlightenment, economy, naval and military.

11) Never play except on the very hard setting.

Postscript - Some Lessons for Diplomacy Generally
One of the pertinent issues seen from continuously working with the AI is that offering large sums of money more often than not achieves the desired purpose.

which leads to an inferential inductive ratiocination--namely, why should this not work in real life diplomacy?

In other words, why don't we just pay our enemies to do what we want them to do?

If we recall our American history, Jefferson and the US paid off the Barbary Pirates with tribute, and the Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire paid tribute and bribes to enemies, and to the enemies of its enemies, in order to effect foreign policy.

One wonders why the US, with nearly unlimited resources, does not do this more.

After all, are we to seriously consider that Qatar or the Saudis have more money than we do?

Surely we can match them and then some. And even if not, surely we can bribe the enemies of our enemies to effect our will.

This, at any rate, seems to be some of the lessons of Game Theory as demonstrated from Game Simulation in AI Diplomacy.

If we recall, the original Diplomacy game was put together by a brilliant foreign policy mind for just this purpose.

Perhaps we need to have our foreign policy establishment game just a tad more, and perhaps simulate some of these proposed conflicts.

Just a thought.

ok 1) never had the HELLAS mod. can't help anyone on that. 2) the mod was MINOR FACTIONS REVENGE which can be found on the links and on youtube. 3) to play GREECE, you need to toggle to the LATE GAME of MINOR FACTIONS REVENGE, starting around 1790 or so. 4) am unsure about compatibility with STEAM or MAC. 5) this setup will run pretty fast on a Windows 7 PC, or on a Windows 10 Gaming PC set to retro gaming standards. 6) if you do use unlimited money or building shortcuts, it's fun to see Greece destroy and annex the Ottoman Empire in a few short turns and to see the Greek Flag flying over its rightful place in CONSTANTINOPLE!

Empire Total War Forum has links for getting the Mod, it's called Empire Total Factions. You have to set it on late to play Greece. To be honest our sons who are far, far better gamers than I will ever be figured this all out a long while back and passed it on to me. ETW is not the very best game, but I will point out that it plays well on a top of the line MAC Book in the stand alone MAC download. I can't speak to Mods and cheats for Apple and MAC, but the vanilla game runs very well on MAC. The vanilla game is very, very long though but it surely can be won.

this is a guide to playing a mod that unlocks Greece as a faction. You can't play Greece in vanilla ETW. Go to the top of the Guide. The Mod is called Minor Factions Revenge and there are both videos on YouTube as well as threads on the various Fora on ETW Modding Fora pertaining to it. Once you install it, you can toggle the game between the early and late versions of the game. In order to play Greece, you will need to toggle to the late game, e.g. 1789/1790. Greece will be a minor power. There is absolutely no requirement anyone uses any cheats or shortcuts to win the game--just install the mod and play using the normal principles. My son has won with Greece playing the mod, and he is adamantly opposed to utilizing any kind of "cheats" or shortcuts. It's not really that I'm am in favor of them either--it's just that I'm actually a very busy professional, so I need to radically compress the playing time of any game, and further, I need to test the boundaries.
