The entire guide
This tutorial is made in regards to armor compatibility involving dyes in my HOUND cosmetic mod.

Starbound typically uses 4 shades per color. One of these colors (in the context of armor) is dyable. This is that color:



Using vanilla dyes, all other colors are untouched besides the color above.

With HOUND's double dyes, however, the following colors are effected by dye:




That's the default color AND black. If the armor contains those colors, it will be effected by double dye. Even if it only contains black, it can still be effected by double dye, but only as the secondary color. This color information is then stored in the armor, so if you take that armor online, the effects will still be visible even if the server doesn't have the mod.

If you are a mod maker and want to know "how can I make my mod compatible with HOUND double dyes?" then it's as simple as this:

When you are making armor, make sure the armor contains both primary and secondary dye colors, both listed above.

If you are running into problems with the dye not working, then you're not using the correct HEX value for those shades of black. To ensure you're using the correct HEX value, use the eyedropper tool in your image editing software to color pick the dye-able shades above.

@Neverward - Late reply, but yep, that's right. I designed this to ensure that anything that adheres to the Starbound palette rules should be compatible.

So I just want to get this straight. This implies that even with vanilla armor, if the armor has those 2 gradients (the brown and the black) the double dye will effect the armor in both areas? I'm just making sure that it doesn't ONLY work with your armor.
