My tip is to keep on the move until you have a squad of at least 8 characters with stats in the 20's. Setting up a defendable position with less is very difficult. Also, if you are about to be raided, with something you cannot handle, hire mercenaries or just avoid the area for a day or so. Using a town to get to research level 3 safely is also wise.
