Your trade vessel got destroyed by an unknown anomaly. Not a lot of people made it out but thankfully you and your trade crew got aboard an old freighter and set out towards the planet. The freighter unfortunately got junked by debris from your vessel during descent and as such you took the drop pods. Good for you since the freighter crashed next to your drop pods with all the contents mostly intact.
