I've been hugging the Mass Driver cannon 10+ times today, and haven't seen Mantis spawn once.
You don't need to hug the mass driver apparently, just fly below 100 meters for as long as it allows you to (before it starts going upwards forcing you to go up with it). After that just try to be close. You don't even need to get the pull up alert. It works, I tried.
Typhoon with LAAM
Identified ALL of the allies and enemies at the start, THEN took out the enemies. Some people say if you don't identify them or take them out without identifying, Mantis won't spawn. Later went to the mass driver, positioned myself from the very beginning and slowed down until I stalled. Basically kept my speed low at all times until I stalled, then stopped lowering speed to avoid crashing, then lowered it again. After that I waited for Mantis basically. I didn't take out any enemies before identifying. Mantis is also unknown and I waited until I identified him too. Though it's painfully obvious from his movements that it's him. I took out the bombers first, since Mantis won't flee anyway.
