There is also a version called "Character Select Minus"
I used it once and it basically just only shows the characters that would work well for that specific stage

Mech Stages: The mech characters like tails or Egg Man
Treasure Hunting Stages: The treasure hunter characters like knuckles or rouge
Speed Stages: Only speed characters like Sonic, Shadow or Amy
