In this guide I will be explaining my theory on what it is that Koitec gave Lizzie's mother back in the clinical trials of 1972 that turned Lizzie into, well, Lizzie. After that I will go through why I believe Lizzie's mother signed up for the trials despite bring pregnant, what the trial drug was actually for and something much darker that paints one very familiar mega corporation as the worst company in all of human history.

Introduction
Hello! My name is Dalsha and today I have for you my take on the very unclear part of Lizzie's story, what caused her to be like she is? In order to do that fully I will need to explain to you how this story unfolds one piece at a time. If you just want the main points summed up and don't want any extra words, skip to the conclusion as that will basically be everything I have said all put into many less words. If you are reading on then I assume you want to hear all the extra words and thoughts in order to more deeply understand my thought process and how I came to the conclusion that I did. (For those who don't know, Lizzie's mother is named Abbey, so if I say Abbey did this or that then I am referring to Lizzie's mother) Well I won't keep you waiting any longer, read on and discover a part of Crimson Gray currently left untouched!
What where the drugs in the clinical trial and what where they for?
To start off, I needed to find the drugs used by Koitec in their clinical trials of 1972. To do that I had to first look at Lizzie currently and figure out what they could be linked to. First off and most obvious, she doesn't have morals and will kill anyone who stands between her and John. This is a very strong indicator of psychopathy or something similar. My first thought was that an antidepressant was used in the clinical trial. That may sound crazy but hear me out - antidepressants have been known to turn previously innocent civilians into total murderers. Don't take my word for it, look at the many first hand stories yourself if you need to.

So if I was dealing with a possible antidepressant, I needed to find one that a). was around before 1972 and b). has made people turn crazy. After a bit of searching I came across the first drug I believe Koitec used as part of the three drug mixture of the 1972 clinical trial; Citalopram. An SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) that increases the amount of the chemical Serotonin in the brain, as depression is caused by low Serotonin levels. It was developed in early 1972, giving it enough time to be able to make it into an experimental drug mix. As for the murderer part, Citalopram has had a history giving some receivers of the drug increased suicidal thoughts and tendencies. Though this is easily not what is happening to Lizzie, it is similar enough to the conditions we are looking for that it doesn't matter. I will explain this bit in better detail in the next section about how the drugs caused Lizzie to be like she is.

Next I needed to find out what could have caused Lizzie to gain superhuman strength and reflexes without becoming super buff. I found that the answer lied within a stimulant drug called Amantadine. It was developed in 1960 and the properties of it that have attracted my attention were discovered in 1969, giving it three years separation from the deadline of 1972. Amantadine was a stimulant type drug that boosted performance by increasing the levels of Dopamine and Serotonin in the brain, as well and increasing the stimulation of the central nervous system (making signals going to and from the brain have more effect on it) and increasing the production and distribution of Adrenalin throughout the body.

Finally, I realised that considering both of these drugs raised up Serotonin levels, that Serotonin Syndrome would be a real problem. Serotonin Syndrome is basically just a fancy way of saying you are going to die because you have to much Serotonin in you brain. In order to counteract this and make their product viable, Koitec had to add in Cyproheptadine, a drug that decreases Serotonin in the body. This would have been required otherwise absolutely no one could have taken the mix of the previous two drugs and not died or be put in serious condition due to Serotonin Syndrome.

As for what they were for, I believe there are two different possibilities; either Koitec was trying to make an antidepressant that would not only remove you depression but give you the kick you need to get back into normal life, or they were trying to create a drug capable of dealing with hot flashes. These are quick bursts of heat from peoples chests to their whole bodies. They can last anywhere from thirty seconds to a full three minutes. I personally believe that the latter option is the correct one so I will be talking about that form here on out. I will continue the talk about hot flashes in the section about why Lizzie's mother would lie about her pregnancy in the first place, but first I will cover how exactly the three drugs I outlined earlier could have made Lizzie as messed up as she is.
How did the trial drugs cause Lizzie to become who she is?
To answer the question of how, we must first understand what. The three drugs from the previous section all had the combined effects of increasing Adrenalin production and circulation, increasing the stimulation of the central nervous system, increasing Dopamine levels in the brain as well as slightly increasing Serotonin levels. All of this may not sound very bad, but it is.

First off, we have to remember that these drugs were taken back when Lizzie was still developing inside her mother, so all of the different chemicals and substances would have been absorbed directly into Lizzie herself. This definitely did have serious repercussions on Lizzie. I suspect that the drugs may have permanently altered Lizzie's body to think that the effects of these drugs was what was supposed to be happening as these effects would have been present not only in Abbey's body, but also inside Lizzie herself as the drugs are absorbed into her through her mother.

Once Lizzie was born her body would already be so much different from the bodies of you and I. Her Adrenalin would be much more active, her central nervous system would be faster and better at transmitting signals and her brain would have so much more Dopamine in it. Just for clarification, Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, meaning that it it sends signals from place to place inside the brain. Now imagine if not only your central nervous system transmitted faster and stronger signals, but your brain could also transmit faster and stronger signals. You would have superhuman reflexes due to the faster transmission speed and you would be stronger and be able to carry more as the strength of your neurological signals gained massive boosts to their own strength.

All that is great and all, but how does it explain Lizzie's clear mental instability? Well it was pretty clear to me from the start. You are messing around with the chemicals inside the human brain. That is always something bound to end terribly if you are not 101% sure on what you are doing, and since this was an experimental mix as it was a clinical trial the drugs were taken in, you can be sure that the mix was not perfected yet.

To end this section, I will just reiterate that the reason Lizzie is so unstable is due to how Koitec would have been messing around with the chemical balance that makes up your brain with a drug formulation that was still in its experimental stages. If that still isn't enough to convince you then also remember that Citalopram, the antidepressant that I speculate to be part of the mix of drugs used by Koitec in the clinical trials had a history of turning some recipients of the drug murderous and psychotic.
Why did Lizzie's mother sign up despite knowing about her pregnancy?
To answer the question of why Abbey and three other pregnant women would sign up to do the clinical trial in the first place despite knowing that they were pregnant. I believe the answer is in what the drug was actually supposed to do; deal with hot flashes. As I said in the first paragraph, I believe the clinical trial was to test out a new hot flash drug mix. I say this because Citalopram, the antidepressant I believe to be part of the mix has been used time and time again to cure hot flashes, and it works very well.

Speaking of hot flashes, what even are they? Well, hot flashes are a massive swelling of heat ranging from your chest to your whole body for between thirty seconds and three minutes. They mainly occur in women as they are related to menopausal transition, aka Gynaecology. Hot flashes have been linked time and time again to pregnancy as well. Though they can occur in men, it only happens when there is prostate/testicular cancer or castration involved. (On a side note, perhaps this has something to do with how this super-murder yandere condition only seems to effect girls, though there is no evidence to support his, simply speculation.)

"Then what's the use of the other drugs?" I hear you ask. That is a good question, and I believe the answer is that Koitec couldn't just put out any drug for dealing with hot flashes as it would easily be tramped over their competition. They needed something more. So Koitec decided that Amantadine should be added to the mix in order to boost up the strength and reactions of whoever was taking it, this way they would be able to get back to their daily lives with a bang and not be held back by the hot flashes. Then Koitec realised the massive and deadly increase in Serotonin, so they put in Cyproheptadine to reduce the levels of said chemical.

But back to the topic, I believe that Abbey took part in the clinical trial despite knowing that she was pregnant because she wanted to deal with the hot flashes that where giving her one hell of a hard time. Without James, (Lizzie's dad) Abbey would have had a rough time already, now add onto that these hot flashes and it would be near unbearable. Abbey took a gamble and signed up for the clinical trial because she needed to remove the hot flashes somehow, and being part of a clinical trial that was testing a drug to not only alleviate hot flashes but to also give her an endurance boost would also be incredibly beneficial for someone in her condition.

That's why I believe Abbey signed up for the clinical trials despite knowing the situation she was in. She wanted her hot flashes to disappear and Koitec's trial drug was the perfect opportunity for that to happen.
The darker secret behind it all...
So now it may seem all wrapped up to you. I thought so too. I was going to leave it there and have my final conclusion being that Koitec were actually trying to do something nice that went sour due to some women doing something they shouldn't have. But since looking closer at the Wournos incident, I now have a totally different conclusion. Koitec knew that their drug would turn developing babies into murderous psychopaths. They set everything up to try and attract as many pregnant women as possible into their clinical test and then set into motion a plan that would take 20 years of patient waiting to complete.

I do just want to point out that this entire section has no solid proof, and so it is just me speculating on a specific possibility that I believe to have much more going for it than other possibilities.

For those unaware, the Wournos incident, which is probably named after either the school it happened at or the name of the killer girl, was the brutal attack and murder of eleven highschoolers and the serious injury of two more. The girl who was the murderer was caught on camera, and the camera footage was played on the news which John and Lizzie where both watching. Only seconds after seeing the footage, both John and Lizzie identify that this girl was like Lizzie, in that she was just and strong and just as crazy.

What caused me to be very surprised, catching the attention of John as well, was that a Koitec representative was on air offering condolences. Why? At this point, Koitec had absolutely no connection to the Wournos incident at this point. If Koitec is as bad as they are made out to be, then why did they send out a rep to do this? Well my friends, it is for a reason much darker and sinister than anyone would ever believe. The seeds that Koitec planted twenty years ago were finally beginning to ripen as the first vicious killing took place. Now all they needed to do was play their cards right and they would increase sales, and therefore profit by hundreds of times.

As pointed out by John and Lizzie during their discussion of the incident, Koitec could now use this as an opportunity to sell more drugs by stating how their drugs could reduce the chances of such a violent killing spree happening again. Families would buy in order to protect their kids and stop them from doing the same. Schools would strongly encourage the taking of Koitec drugs as they wouldn't want the second Wournos incident to take place at their school. Many more places for even more reasons would be buying up and soon enough, Koitec would be billions of dollars richer.

So there you have it. Koitec set this all up on purpose. They coldly planned this out over twenty years ago when they specially designed a drug that would attract as many pregnant women as possible to the clinical trial and still have the effects on the children that they desired. Once that was done, they simply waited until they could reap the rewards of their misdeeds. Twenty years later they got the best thing they could have asked for. Instead of only one or two people being randomly killed or just seriously injured, A person who was shown to be completely insane, violently murdered eleven people and seriously injured two more, all while doing this as painfully and brutally as possible and being caught on camera at one of the most important places for young kids, a highschool. This combination was better than Koitec could have ever asked for.

They immediately jumped on it, send out a Koitec rep to be on the news offering condolences in order paint Koitec as company that felt what you felt and were genuinely sorry, as well as would attempt to help you through this tough time. Then they market their drugs to people, telling them that they could stop such a thing from happening again. Koitec is already a kind and understanding company in the eyes of the public, so of course people would go to Koitec over any other rival corporation if they said they had a solution.
Hope for when all seems lost.
With Koitec having done what they are, it may seem that all hope is lost, but I don't think so. In doing this whole setting up of the Wournos incident and others, Koitec may have sealed their own fate. If everything went perfectly then not only would Koitec be stopped, but if John and Lizzie played their cards right, they themselves could be the ones who dismantle Koitec and destroy it for good.

Once enough Wournos-like incidents have happened, the police autopsy team would have picked up something similar between all of the killers. They all would have had much different brains than any other humans. Eventually it could be discovered that they all had exactly the same set of differences in their bodies that other people. They all had skewed up levels of Dopamine and Serotonin, their central nervous systems were all much better at conducting signals and could all do it faster and they all had much higher levels of Adrenalin. It would take a ton of time, but eventually it could possibly be traced back to the clinical trial of 1972 and the drug that would have been able to cause these exact conditions to arise.

There would be lots of distrust and speculation about Koitec, putting them in a very bad place. All John and Lizzie would need to do is give a slight push in the right direction and Koitec would come crumbling down to the ground, burning in the hell they deserve.

In other words, the thing that Koitec did twenty years ago to make them billions of dollars could cost them more than even billions of dollars could ever fix.
Conclusion
Firstly, if you are here after skipping from the beginning, then welcome back!

But onto the conclusion, It all started back in 1972 when Koitec devised a plan to rake them in billions of dollars by purposefully creating a generation of mentally unstable killers from the unborn babies of the women, some of whom were hopefully pregnant, which we now know did turn out to be true, who were drawn into a Koitec clinical trial for a drug that could help them deal with hot flashes. The drugs they used were Citalopram, an antidepressant that was used to treat hot flashes, Amantadine, a stimulant that would give the user increase strength and reflexes and Cyproheptadine, a drug used to reduce Serotonin in the brain as both previously mentioned drugs increase Serotonin, and Koitec couldn't have to much of a Serotonin increase as such a thing could be lethal. After taking part, the women who were found to be pregnant were removed in an effort to make Koitec seem like they did care about people.

Before Lizzie could even make a single choice of her own, she was cursed to a life of instability as the drugs taken by her mother permanently altered her body, brain and nervous system, just as Koitec had designed them to do. She was now faster, stronger and could endure more than most people. The messing around with such carefully balanced body systems caused Lizzie to become completely unstable. She then grew up with half a family, and the half she did have (her mother) become a prescription drug abuser. Further adding to Lizzie's messed uo mental state.

The Wournos incident was the first in what was going to become a plethora of similar incidents, all of which would be used by Koitec as a way of selling their drugs, saying they and the answer and taking their drugs would stop anything like the Wournos incident from happening again.

However, the autopsy department would eventually realise that all the psycho killers had very similar alterations to their body. In good time, it would eventually be discovered that the Koitec clinical trials of 1972 were all testing drugs that had the ability to do exactly what was happening. Essentially meaning Koitec set themselves up to be taken down.

Distrust would surge as Koitec became more and more hated. John and Lizzie could then jump in and, with a strong push in the right direction, could bring down the the massive mega corporation of Koitec and watch as they destroyed the thing that had kept them running and hiding all this time.

To finish off, I firstly want to say a massive thank you to Sierra Lee. Without him taking the time to write out and plan and then re-write and re-plan again and again then I wouldn't be able to do this at all. Secondly, I do hope that I made this whole thing easy to understand and make sense. Since it is such a big theory, no matter how many times I go through I will probably miss a thing or two, so please be forgiving.

And on that note, I would like to say a massive thank you for taking the time to read this. I will now depart, heading back into the infinite abyss of cyberspace.

Have a good day and hopefully we meet again if I write another one of these on something else in Crimson Gray.

This is a really good theory! I remembered seeing the first Crimson Gray game somewhere a good while ago, and only found it again and played both the first and second game in early/mid- 2024. I do enjoy reading other people's theories online, since if I were to attempt to myself, I would probably end up hyperfixating on it for far too long. A good few of my own medication interactions have a possibility of leading to serotonin syndrome, but I was mostly put on Cyproheptadine for increasing my appetite, although I believe the dosage lessens or increases effects depending on the dosage. There are still a few grammar mistakes, such as "where" as opposed to "were," but overall, the theory itself was pretty well written! :lizzienote:

After all this time it makes me happy to hear the theory still holds up today, I'm glad you enjoyed reading it! The implications for the story if a third entry in the Crimson Gray series if it ever came out (which admittedly would be a substantially high magnitude of effort so I'm not going to get my hopes up) would certainly make for a compelling and deserving ending to the series. Thank you for taking the time to read and you're welcome :)

Yeah this is a very good theory. This might be late but I like your analysis and through effects it has, especially concerning the "neutral ending". In the right direction, John and Lizzie can expose them and it wouldn't take long for the people to start piecing things together. Thanks so much for the theory analysis.

Thank you! I always check in on both Crimson Gray steam pages pretty consistantly, there’s no need to worry about being late. I’m honestly happy that you think so. I have actually thought about writing a story or two and a visual novel is pretty high on the list of things I might do. Again, that you for your comment and cheers from Australia.

Kinda late comment but why not: Seeing your detailed theories & head canon analysis for Crimson Gray, I think you'd make an excellent writer with your 'writers vision' to the deeper meanings behind stories. This was a lovely read overall, cheers from usa.

Really interesting! I used to take citalopram so I'm a little shocked to here it might be a huge part of this visual novel... Really liked reading though, good job!

Thanks! I have certainly been thinking about it, and I probably will sometime in the future. I do quite enjoy adding backstory and digging up hidden plot elements, so if I did make one you can guarantee that there will be a deeper story that will be hidden from plain sight

you should just go ahead and write your own vn at this point, you'll get at least one sale from me.
