An easily-referenced travel-map of Kaidan for early-game players (with some value for the late game too).

Why This Guide?
My first attempt at playing this game a few years back quickly fell to frustration, mostly because people and quests kept mentioning places I had no idea where they were or how long it would take to get there, and scrolling around the world-map without ever really being able to see the whole thing at once was just a big pain. I looked around to see if anyone had posted a more usable map I could keep open as a reference, saw that nobody had, and gave up.

I recently picked the game up again for another try, found that there was STILL no reference map anywhere to be found, and this time decided I'd just make my own. I now present that map to you.
Existing Maps
User "Poobah Gorg" in the forum found a picture of the mainland of Kaidan on the Internet, which at least shows most of the cities that aren't on the northern islands. However, it is not very useful for spotting the various toll-bridges, river-crossings and other points of interest around the land. It looks like this:
-----
In the mid-game, you get access to ships and airships, and these come with a destination-map interface of their own. I wish it were available to the player earlier, as it probably would've been enough to satisfy me at the time and would've saved me doing all of this in the first place! The highlighted cities change depending on which destinations are available, but those travel-maps look like this:

A Proper Travel Map!
Ultimately I still ended up drawing my own, because I wanted not just a clear picture of which landmarks actually connected to each other, but also how long each road would take to traverse which is not always clear just by looking at them. Advance warning of toll-crossings was also important, as they can really pinch you in the early-game.

All the travel-times on my map are at the basic rate of speed. Once you have some extra money you can buy "leechallions" that will reduce all these travel-times by up to 33% as long as you've bought one for every cart.

Just a few things to note:
  • Toll-bridges start at 10 gold per crossing, but this goes up as the size of your caravan increases.
  • Smuggler-crossings give you a choice between 3 ferrymen of varying cost/skill. If you get caught, you risk a surprise customs-inspection at the very least. Regular border-crossings have a high chance of customs-inspections.
  • There is no air-connection between Seetch and Asmor. Otherwise, all 'A' cities can be flown to directly from all others no matter the distance. It takes about 7 days for an airship to cross the entire map, but can take up to twice that if bad weather strikes (common in Fall and Winter).
  • Palaces are only accessible to Guild-members ranked Bourgeois or Nobleman (the top two Guild ranks).
  • The water network is somewhat complex as you cannot just sail from one port to any other port even once you have your own ship. The river network is somewhat separated from the ocean network, and even in the ocean you are forced to follow the existing shipping routes. It would have made a horrible mess of my map, so I have instead included the complete shipping schedules for each city. All of these schedules are subject to random delays, and prices vary based on the size of your caravan.

Bonus 1: Mine maps
Clearing out the abandoned mines is a tricky task, not least because they are deadly mazes when you first enter them! However, by being generous enough at the various bars, you will sometimes be offered the chance to buy a random map for 80-120 gold. You aren't told which mine the map applies to (if any--there seem to be some decoy maps floating around too) but you can access all the ones you're carrying once inside, to try to figure it out from landmarks. Here are some of the maps you can buy at the pubs, though I don't know if the mazes are randomized upon starting a new game.

Bonus 2: Guild Rank Insignia
As you progress through the ranks, your Guild Insignia becomes progressively more elaborate. Here are all the ranks in order:

Wow, very nice. I think I'll dig out the game again. :)

(Played the demo with enthusiasm, but then the game not so much when I got it some time later.)
