I think I have the optimal control configuration and I'll try and explain it here.

The biggest thing you want to avoid is having your hands moving all over the keyboard or mouse. The following control configuration should give you an advantage over those using "classic" configurations.

The goal is to have your mouse select target and rotate, and your left hand in the WSAD position self-targeting, clear-target, manual-target, and attack.

This means the only other movement you have to do is map zoom in/out, hit the F keys, and alt-f4. I usually set up the F keys slightly different for each char.

F1: Group effect spell (AMA/EQ/KF)
F2: special ability (rescue for shal, (kara's curse for qor, elusion for riija)
F3: Disabling spell key 1 (dazzle/blind)
F4: Disabling spell key 2 (hold/dement/purge)
F5: Heavy hitting spell (BoF/Splash)
F6: Long distance spell (fireball/LB)

Essentially if you see an enemy you left click then run down the F keys from F3 to F5 while hitting the attack key. Blind/dement/BOF whatever. Very easy.

You will also want to turn down some things in order to get the fastest response from your actions. Here's a picture that describes how I have things set up. If this is too confusing I may make a small YouTube video where I can show you why this is so important.

This takes a little while to get used to but it gives you an edge. "

Why use the software renderer? Does it actually bring any advantage, or is this just your personal preference?

I like this setup and am using it, EXCEPT for one thing. Use software renderer? NOO it's gives me a headache and I don't see that as giving anyone an edge to look at graphics in a worse way.
