No you have to line up the pumpkin picture with the moon. As long as it does grow into the next stage you can plant it anytime.

This was very helpful. Thnx. As a side note, it might be hard to line all 3 up cause the moon hangs low and the world will block the view between the pumpkin and moon. But apparently that is alright. If you can remember where the moon is as you rotate. You can still line them up THROUGH the planet and it will connect and change. A little tricky to do, but it works.
