What are we doing in this guide?
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse has a major issue.

The speed at which the game runs is dictated by its framerate.

This means that by changing the framerate of your display, you can manipulate the speed at which the game runs. This is great for assisting in difficult boss fights, or to make the game exponentially harder.
How to change the game's framerate
In this example, I will use a nVidia GPU, but the process will be similar if your graphics card is from AMD or Intel.

  • Right click on your desktop.

  • Select "NVIDIA Control Panel"
  • Select "Change Resolution" from the menu on the left.

    You should now see this screen.

  • Change the refresh rate of your monitor.
Actually using this to your advantage
Changing this setting will cause the game to run at X/60 speed, where X is your refresh rate.

For example: a refresh rate of 30 will cause the game to run at 50% of its normal speed.
10 will be 1/6th of the normal speed.

Setting the value to less than 60 will result in the game running slower than usual, but how do we get the game to go faster?
Disabling Vertical Sync
  • Go back to the nVidia Control Panel.
  • Navigate to the "Manage 3D Settings" menu.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the list.
  • Set Vsync to "Off."
Using this to your disadvantage (or to fix the game)
This setting determines the refresh rate that your GPU will output as well.

Setting it to "Off" will remove the cap on how fast the game can run, and it will run as fast as your GPU can render frames.

Changing this setting to "On" will make the game run the way it is supposed to.

I was kinda hoping I could just add something to the games launch options instead of decreasing the refresh rate of my entire monitor.

I have two monitors, one (my main) doesn't have any other options than 144Hz, and my second monitor is 120Hz or 144Hz.

But perhaps, yeah I'll probably check that out the. Sounds interesting, might work.

Huh, it's sorta weird that it can't be changed to 60 hz.

Looking it up, it seems like RivaTuner Statistics Server is the best option for limiting a game's framerate to a specific number. I know that it's bundled with MSI Afterburner, but I think you can download it on its own as well.

I can't change the refresh rate on my monitor.
The only option is 144Hz, any way to fix this?
