Early game hints
This is a starting guide for Dead in Vinland. I have not finished the game and in fact I Have not gotten past day 20 in game time, I am still playing. I like to investigate every aspect of a game, so of the areas I have covered, I know them well.

This guide will give just a few thoughts to get you started. If you wish to investigate the game fully on your own, STOP READING NOW. The game is random enough that every play through is very different but I might give away some spoilers here.

1. Your starting family has randomized skills. Look these over on the character sheet. You will want one family member with a high score in the following Skills: Crafting, Scavenging, and Exploring. A high score is in the thirty’s, forty’s is better but very rare. Secondary skills in forestry, mining, and hunting are also helpful. If these are in the twenty’s or better you are doing well.

2. Your starting family also has randomized Traits. Traits can be good or bad. At the start of the game each family member will have one good trait and multiple bad traits. Look at these closely. If one of the family members has a trait that gives -25% experience in the primary skill you have chosen for them, then you might want to start over. Even worse if they have -25% experience in everything, you might want to start over.

3. Early in the game you will encounter a bad guy. Actually it will be several bad guys. In your very first fight, fill your roster with three family members. Pay attention to each family member’s abilities and you should win this fight. In your second fight, this happens in the same turn, only put one family member in the fight, I put Eirik. Trust me on this. You can’t win this fight so minimize the damage to your family.

4. Just as the tutorial instructs, the logging camp should be your first improvement.

5. I found Depression to be a major issue for me early in the game so the second improvement I make is to build the Tavern.

6. I build the Rest Area or Mining Camp next. The order is up to you.

7. I found that scavenging your ship once per day will provide enough food for the first week. Scavenging this area also seems to generate greater Depression then other activities so by limiting the scavenging in this area it helps control Depression.

8. Exploring the island is very interesting. You will find many resources and additional companions. The game does this very well and I find this part of the game extremely entertaining. Most encounters offer multiple options; try them all if you can. Beware this will make for a long game, 29 hours to complete 20 days of game time….

9. Ropes become one of the scarcest resources. Your initial scavenging will provide you with enough to get started and fights with bad guys can drop more, they are random drops. I could not find it documented anywhere so here is where you make ropes… in the Forge. You will need hemp to make rope so the Herbalist and/or the Garden are needed.

10. While exploring you will discover other companions. So far I have discovered two couples and three individuals. These companions can help greatly. They give an extra set of skills and an extra set of actions per turn. Note that they also require food and water every turn. My own guideline is that once you have so many stations that you can’t fill them all with the family, you should consider adding a companion.

11. The Harvesting station provides fruit which can be eaten but the fruit can also be made into juice. In game terms this is an addition to your potable water supply. Note that after a while this station gives less fruit and it generates a large amount of Fatigue to gather the fruit.

I hope these few hints will help you make a good start to the game. Others can add their thoughts and tips to make this as comprehensive as possible.

I doubt I would ever write a complete walkthrough but if this material is useful to someone willing to put together a more comprehensive guide then you are free to use what I have collected.

I hope you enjoy the game. I have.

Ahrimann's point: He probably knows this already, but specifically you send Moira into the second intro fight *alone*. It feels cheesy and wrong, but it's a single person with a -15% injuries buff, and indeed, she's not especially good at working any of the starter camps anyway. win/win, unless you're Moira.

Looking up the Tribute list in the forum is a huge benefit to planning, but it might be more immersive to not know what ridiculous demand is coming next. If you want 100% completion, you may need to plan two weeks in advance to get the necessary buildings ready in time. You can get away with failing a few tributes, though, if you just want to be surprised every week.

Some upgrades scale with the size of your camp. A Tavern is a lot better than an idol early on. Late game, when you've leveled up a bunch of bonuses to recovery, that few points on a larger number of people will do wonders, while early on, it isn't hard to find two people who need a therapy session, and the idol won't cut it. Double worker upgrades are very situational, but if you need to collect a lot of a perishable resource, you should aim to have a two-worker station three days in advance - and let the source replenish before the push, too.

More buildings are usually better than Tier 1 upgrades, with the exception of Animal Pens and Hunting, and possibly Fishing. Animal pens are extremely demanding and should be built last, though - you need a pipeline of green water as well as wheat, which might not be worth the trouble, since cloth drops frequently from combat loot as it is. Fishing is low maintenance by comparison. Hunting requires a Forge, but you get even more benefit if you have Iron to build Traps. Fishing and cooking together is a strong achievement that will take your food into the mid-game with the least requirements, and Hunting takes it all to the next level, allowing you to flex between whichever resources and skills are easiest to use at the time.

Lumber camp, rest area, tavern. Not necessarily in that order. Mining can sort of be delayed because of Shipwreck materials, but I'm a dozen hours past that stage of the game and I'd have to restart to figure out the tempo.

If you're new to the game, then the Tavern sounds bad, but it's actually great. It has a "relaxation mode", which means decent recovery and no sickness penalty. The first time I played, I figured the sickness penalty was going to hurt too much to make it worth the trouble, and I ended up depressing everyone to death!

You really need to consider food and water before adding more people. You probably need Harvesting station and some Tier 1 Water upgrades to comfortably accommodate 6 people. You can sort of coast on Shipwreck and exploration rations, but don't harvest more than you can eat (save some for later). If you get over your head with recruits, then you'll just starve people.

I have been playing the demo and I wondered how the person with the highest Scavenging could hate it and have the XP penalty. Random traits and skills explains it.

One thing I always forget: make cheese before end the day because you milk will turn bad!:steamfacepalm:

Another thing, during the first fight against Björn, I usually use Moira. Her healing ability lower by 15% the damage taken and I find her less useful than the 3 other at the beginning, so even with an injury for a few days, it doesn't hinder too much my progression.

Should be obvious, but I made the mistake so many times that I want to point it out.
Check your fire at all times!
Tinder is a very rare item and losing your fire is pretty deadly. Devs announced that it wont be possible to "overclick" your fire to death while purifying water in the next patch, but it is the case now. In my case, I often forgot to check the fire level after cooking, which uses a lot of energy. Obvious enough, but you need wood to keep your fire burning, always check that you will have enough before starting a construction which will deplete your stock. Also keep in mind that rain or tempest will lower your fire level after clicking the "next day" button, in addition to the usual loss during the night.

you can also add this if you like: dont grind extra water, rain will fill it.

All these tips and hints are great. I am using many of them myself. Thanks to everyone who posted.
