A VPS is shared resources in a VM to host servers, with this you don't have to pay per server & per slot, meaning you can run far more servers and any type of server for no extra cost. These typically do come with decent DDoS mitigation if you get them from good hosts.
OVH, ReliableSite, NFO are good VPS providers with solid DDoS protection.
They also sell dedicated, which is a server machine built and hosted just for your network and nobody else has access. This is the best for serious sized servers (40 players and up with multiple servers)
NFO has great DDoS mitigation if you select the right location, look at the NFO "Our Network" page and find the (premium) filtration locations like Chicago & Seattle to get the best experience with them.
