The story unfolds in the distant future, on a desolate Land. Plantation 13 is one of the mobile fortresses where the human species has entrenched itself. It involves the Parasites, orphans cut off from the world, intended to protect the plantation of beasts named "howlers" at the controls of huge robots: the Franxx. Driving a Franxx requires two synchronized parasites (a pistil and a stamen, that is to say a girl and a boy).

The main character, Hiro is a Parasite whose future seemed bright, but who has never managed to drive a Franxx, and is therefore deprived of purpose. One day, he meets Zero Two a horned Parasite with howling blood, reputed to systematically kill his partners. She makes Hiro his new teammate.
