Introduction

The pet mini-game is located on the top-right corner of your HUD. Whenever you leave your pet in the home and let your characters out of Puck village, your pet will go out for adventure, and you can play the mini-game by choosing the direction for your pet.

The pet mini-game is in fact a simplified, pet-version dungeon. You can find foods and items in the dungeon, including key items (e.g. empty cans). You can also find pet food (beef/bonito/tuna chow) in the dungeon. Such item is the only way you can level up your pet and improve its healing ability.

The pet mini-game has several rules:

The map consists of 1 main area and 7 different stages.
Superi R. Labyrinth can be accessed from the beginning as it contains no key item.
For the rest stages, your character must clear at least 1 dungeon in a certain stage before your pet can go to that stage.
Each stage has 1 key item (3x empty cans and 3x beef chow in total) guarded by a Hellcat.
To defeat Hellcat you need a corresponding elemental collar.
Your characters must meet the certain level requirement before you can obtain a specific collar.

Routes and Level Requirements

Choose direction for your pet at T-junctions.
L=left R=right

Lv.2:

Wind Collar: LLRL
Empty Can: RLLL→enter Caiaphas Woods→LR

Lv.6:

Fire Collar: LRLLRL
Beef Chow: RLRLL→enter Mt. St. Kenopi→LR

Lv.10:

Water Collar: LLL
Empty Can: RRRL→enter Pavel Gardens→RL

Lv.14:

Earth Collar: LRR
Bonito Chow: RLRRL→enter Klopp Caverns→RL

Lv.18:

Light Collar: LRLLL
Empty Can: RLLRL→enter Aplieste Shrine→LL

Lv.22:

Dark Collar: LRLR
Tuna Chow: RRLRLR→enter Espina Temple→RR

Legend:

× means dead end.
item contains food; type depends on your character level. Contains key item if guarded by Hellcat.
items* contains only venture wings or bomb.

Happened to me also. This bug actually can happen with any collar you can collect. It also happened when i got the earth collar. I think this bug happens when the quickbar is full of items. i tried to remove stuff from the quick bar, and the next time i got stuff from the cat, it put it in my storage. So i think this bug happens when your quickbar is full.

I originally posted this in another thread, but this is what worked for me concerning the bug:

Okay, I know this is a rather old thread, but this is what happened to me:
- Found the Fire Collar
- Did not return home when my cat was back for me to collect the Collar
- Send Tama on another errand - found a food item
- Went back home to collect collar and food --> Only food showed in storage box after letting my pet tag along
- Tried to fight the Evil cat despite having no collar in storage
- Fight was successful and I still got the can of cat food to level up

So, as described above, the collar still exits within the game, it just won't show in the storage box. Just make sure to return home BEFORE collecting the 2nd item gained after fighting those evil cats so you can collect that bonus item.

Yeahhh, I just experienced that bug... I got the wind collar normally but the can you get for its hellcat, AND the fire collar AND the beef you get from THAT hellcat are all lost forever to me due to this bug...
I've read that New game + exists in this game and is necessary for some achievements anyway and thus ideal for a 'full clear file' like I tend to wanna go for in JRPGs. Does this cat quest stuff reset on NG+ at least so I can try it then?

IMPORTANT NOTE: Whenever you pick up an item, immediately go back and fetch your pet and confirm that the item made it into your storage chest. If you pick up more than one item in one session there's a serious chance that one or more of those items will disappear forever due to a bug, and in the case of things like cans or pet food they'll never come back.
