Whilst not all dark rooms are the dark room, this does assume some things from the original timeline.
Of course with any fan theory there will be arguments for and against - this was just something I thought at the time of playing!
Also, there's only a single text from Max's dad to Max, which Max never replies to.
Also, you discount the card that Max's parents send Chloe, and there is no way that Max's parents would send a card to Chloe and not mention it to their daughter, not after how close Max and Chloe were. Remember that Chloe specifically refuses to let Max treat her as anything but normal.
Also, while ericanadian is correct that we never see Max use a camera other than a polaroid-style camera, with the variations between the original timeline and AU, it's actually possible that despite Max's claim that she didn't buy a camera (to her mom) that she actually did-- because the dark room comments are 10/2 and the mom conversation is 10/5. And Mom thought it was a lot of money to be spending at a camera store.
I'd also agree that the dark room is a generic photography room and not all dark rooms are The Dark Room.
I suppose your theory is possible, but a dark room is a thing used for developing photos, and it doesn't necessarily mean it's THE dark room. I do acknowledge that there was no reference to a regular dark room at Blackwell, but given that Max was running with instant photos the whole time, it may just never have come up. There are a lot of rooms you never enter and an old and storied art academy would almost certainly have one.
My understanding was that Max effectively became Victoria in this version of events, which was reinforced when you literally become Victoria in the nightmare. Given that Victoria was similarly close with Nathan and had no clue about his... side work, I had assumed Max similarly had no idea about it.
